Album Review: My End And My Beginning by Ruud Hermans Band If you’re the kind of person who digs vinyl crates like they’re treasure chests, then My End And My Beginning might just be one of those hidden gems that makes your heart skip. Released in 1980 by the Ruud Hermans Band—a Dutch outfit with a knack for blending rock, folk, world, and country vibes—this record feels like a warm hug from someone you haven’t met yet. The style leans heavily into country, but don’t let that fool ya; it’s got enough soul to fill a barn dance and enough grit to keep things real. Let’s talk tracks, shall we? First up is the title track, "My End And My Beginning." It’s one of those songs where you can almost picture Ruud sitting on a wooden stool under a spotlight, strumming his guitar like he’s telling you a secret. The lyrics are simple but hit hard—it’s about endings turning into new starts, kinda like how spring follows winter. You know, life stuff. What makes this tune stick? Maybe it’s the raw honesty or maybe it’s the way the pedal steel whispers in the background like an old friend offering advice. Either way, it lingers long after the needle lifts. Then there’s "Everybody Sings His Own Love Song," which is basically the musical equivalent of watching a sunset over a cornfield. This track has a breezy, carefree vibe that sneaks up on you. At first listen, it sounds like your typical love ditty, but give it another spin and you’ll catch little nuggets of wisdom tucked between the verses. Something about how everyone’s got their own version of love, y’know? It’s not trying too hard to impress—it’s just being itself, and that’s what makes it so damn likable. Props to Mike v.d. Logt for the album art, too. The photography captures that earthy, no-frills aesthetic perfectly. It’s like looking at an old Polaroid photo of people you’ve never met but somehow feel connected to anyway. Now here’s the kicker—this album came out in 1980, back when disco was still hogging the limelight and punk was busy smashing guitars. In a world obsessed with flashy trends, the Ruud Hermans Band decided to take a step back and focus on storytelling. And honestly? That’s why it works. So if you stumble across My End And My Beginning, grab it. Not because it’s some flawless masterpiece (it ain’t), but because it’s genuine. Like finding a handwritten note in a library book, it reminds you that music doesn’t always need to shout to be heard. Oh, and fun fact: rumor has it Ruud once said he wrote these songs while fixing a tractor. True or not, I believe it. There’s something about this record that smells like fresh hay and honest work. Now go listen—you won’t regret it.
