Sweet Comfort Band - Hearts Of Fire

Album Review: Hearts Of Fire by Sweet Comfort Band Alright, let’s talk about Hearts Of Fire. Released in 2009, this album from Sweet Comfort Band is a bit of a genre blender—Pop/Rock, Funk/Soul, Contemporary Christian, Soft Rock, AOR, Gospel, you name it. It's like they couldn’t decide what vibe to go with, so they just threw everything into the mix and hoped for the best. And honestly? It kinda works. The band pulls off some solid jams here, blending tight musicianship with heartfelt lyrics (props to Bob Bennett for penning some killer lines). You’ve got Rick Thomson laying down smooth vocals while also handling drums like a boss, Randy Thomas shredding on electric guitar, and Bryan Duncan flexing his keyboard wizardry. Oh, and don’t forget David Diggs—he’s pulling triple duty as producer, arranger, AND percussionist. Dude’s everywhere on this thing. Now, I gotta highlight a couple tracks that stuck with me. First up: “Feel Like Singin’”. This one feels like sunshine breaking through clouds after a long rainstorm. The groove hits right away, thanks to Kevin Thomson’s bassline and Larry Hall’s trumpet giving it that funky edge. It’s uplifting without being cheesy, which is harder than it sounds when you’re dealing with gospel-inspired tunes. There’s something infectious about how the whole band comes together—the handclaps, the backing vocals—it makes you wanna sing along even if you don’t know the words yet. Then there’s “The Road”, which hits different. It’s more introspective, slower-paced but still packed with emotion. Doug Cameron’s violin adds this cinematic feel, almost like you’re watching a movie unfold in your head. Lyrically, it feels personal, like someone pouring their soul out over life’s twists and turns. It’s not flashy, but sometimes simplicity speaks louder than all the bells and whistles. What really stands out about Hearts Of Fire is its balance between polished production and raw energy. Jack Joseph Puig did an amazing job mixing this thing—it sounds crisp without losing that live-band vibe. Plus, the reissue remastering by J Powell gives it an extra layer of warmth that modern albums often lack. If I had to nitpick, though, I’d say a few tracks blend together a bit too much. Like, “You Need a Reason” and “They Just Go On” are both great individually, but back-to-back? Feels repetitive. Still, minor quibble overall. In the end, Hearts Of Fire isn’t just another CCM record—it’s proof that faith-based music can swing hard and hit deep at the same time. Whether you’re jamming out to “Feel Like Singin’” or reflecting on “The Road,” this album has moments that stick with you long after the last note fades. Oh, and random thought: If Sweet Comfort Band ever decided to tour Japan again, I’d totally buy merch just to see Kernie Erickson’s artwork up close. That guy deserves more credit for making this package look as good as it sounds.

YES!!!!!! I love SCB! Thanks for posting this album. This song in particular's my favourite from the project. I just love the fact that they got the legendary Louis "Thunder Thumbs" Johnson to play bass on this track (as well as on "They Just Go On"). This band was definitely the real deal!
