Album Review: COMING SOON by tif – A Sonic Wormhole to Chill in Alright, let’s dive into COMING SOON, the 2017 brainchild of tif, an electronic album that’s equal parts drone, ambient, and “what even is this?” vibes. Released under Experimental Records (and also self-released because why not), this US-born gem feels like someone took all your anxieties, melted them down, and turned them into soundscapes you can nap to—or maybe cry softly in the shower. Either way, it’s good. First up, we’ve got "새로운 시대" (“A New Era,” if my Korean Google skills are on point). This track is basically the musical equivalent of staring out a rain-streaked window while sipping lukewarm coffee. It starts slow—like, glacier-moving-in-real-time slow—but builds just enough texture to keep things interesting. There’s something about the hums and drones here that sticks with you, like gum on the bottom of your shoe but in a comforting way. You know how some songs grab you by the collar and scream for attention? Not this one. Instead, it whispers, “Hey, I’m over here being mysterious,” and somehow, that works. Then there’s "쇼핑몰에서 큰 분수가 있는 원자력 냉각" ("Nuclear Cooling Tower at the Mall Fountain," which sounds like dystopian poetry). Honestly, who thinks of these titles? Genius or madness? Probably both. The track itself feels like wandering through a deserted shopping mall at 3 AM—spooky yet oddly soothing. Imagine echoes bouncing off linoleum floors, water trickling from a fountain shaped like a rocket ship, and faint mechanical whirring in the background. If David Lynch ever needed music for a scene where characters question their existence while eating Cinnabons, this would be it. Now, don’t get me wrong—this isn’t exactly party music unless your idea of partying involves sitting cross-legged on the floor debating whether reality is real. But hey, sometimes life calls for introspective weirdness, and COMING SOON delivers that in spades. Reflecting on this album, I gotta say—it reminds me of those moments when you’re scrolling through Netflix, can’t decide what to watch, and end up watching nothing. That sense of floating indecision? Yeah, tif captured that feeling perfectly. So if you’re looking for background noise that doubles as existential art, hit play. Just don’t blame me if you start questioning everything. Oh, and fun fact: listening to this album might make you want to rename your Wi-Fi router to something pretentious like “VoidEcho9000.” Don’t ask me why—I just know.

Notes

  • Ripped as MP3s long ago from a long-lost ROM and edited to get their true clarity, rather than clunky chiptune. The discs were partly rotten but what was salvaged was salvaged.
