The Defhouse EP Vol. 1 by Bassheads: A Timeless Slice of UK House Magic If you’ve ever stumbled across The Defhouse EP Vol. 1 by Bassheads, chances are it’s left a mark on your soul—or at least your dance floor. Released in 1990 under the radar (literally, no label backing), this little gem is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. It doesn’t scream for attention; instead, it pulls you into its world with beats so warm they feel like an old friend hugging you after years apart. Let’s talk genre: This is pure electronic goodness, leaning heavily into house and downtempo vibes. Imagine being transported to some smoky underground club in London where everyone’s lost in their own headspace but still vibing together as one. That’s what this EP does—it wraps around you like fog rolling through the streets of the UK at midnight. Now, onto the tracks. I gotta say, “Everybody In The House Make Some Noize” hits different. Like… really different. From the moment that bassline kicks in, you’re hooked. It’s not just music; it’s permission to let loose, shout out loud, and forget whatever crap life threw at you earlier. There’s something raw about how simple yet powerful the chant is. You don’t need fancy lyrics when the groove speaks louder than words ever could. Every time I hear it, I’m right back there—arms flailing, feet stomping, heart pounding. Pure euphoria. Then there’s “All Over The World There Are Lots Of People Who Are Alone Tonight.” Yeah, yeah, long title, I know—but damn, does it hit hard emotionally. The downtempo beat feels like a heartbeat slowing down, matching the melancholy tone of the vocals. It’s haunting, almost uncomfortable, because it reminds you of all those nights spent staring at the ceiling, wondering if anyone else out there gets it. But here’s the twist—it’s oddly comforting too. Knowing someone put these feelings into sound makes loneliness feel less lonely, ya know? Credit where it’s due: Mastered and lacquer-cut by Porky, who clearly knew what he was doing. The production quality might not be perfect by today’s standards, but honestly? That adds to the charm. It’s real, unpolished, and dripping with authenticity. Back then, it wasn’t about chasing perfection—it was about making people move or think or both. Reflecting on this album now, decades later, it strikes me how timeless it feels. Sure, it came from a specific time and place, but the emotions it evokes are universal. And isn’t that what great music should do? Connect us across space and time? Oh, fun fact: Did you notice how many tracks mention "bass" and "house"? Almost like they were daring you to ignore the obvious. Spoiler alert—you can’t. So yeah, give The Defhouse EP Vol. 1 a spin if you haven’t already. Just don’t blame me if you end up dancing alone in your living room at 2 AM. Or crying. Probably both.

About Bassheads

UK production duo hailing from Birkenhead and Neston, Merseyside in England. Bassheads originally came to prominence in 1991 with the release of "Is There Anybody Out There?" Sampling Afrika Bambaataa's "Just Get up And Dance" vocal for this Top 5 UK single release. Subsequent singles "Back To The Old School" (UK chart position, Number 12) and "Who Can Make You Feel Good" (UK chart position, Number 38) refused to compromise on their pulsating house/sample work. However, by the time of their debut Album (C.O.D.E.S) in 1993, the Bassheads had begun to embrace the ambient house movement spearheaded by the Orb and Aphex Twin. At the core of the album was a 24-minute track, "C.O.D.E.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool little nugget for you. The Defhouse EP Vol 1 by Bassheads came out in 1990, a gem from the UK's electronic scene. It’s got that classic house and downtempo vibe. What makes it special? Porky handled both mastering and lacquer cutting. Not many albums can brag about having one guy nail both of those crucial steps. Plus, with tracks like "Now Scream" and "Do You Like Bass," it’s got this raw energy that still feels fresh today.

I will never understand why this tune wasn't bigger. I suppose it was always in the shadow of "Is There Anybody Out There". Bassheads done some top top tunes!

It had good elements, its just the track never seemed to 'kick off'. Needed producing differently.

Was only just listening to this with Desa Basshead who wrote and produced this. I was at Big Wave at the time and we pressed 1000 copies of the 1st Bassheads E.P. and distributed them to all the cool dance record shops at the time. Dave at City Sounds took a box and sold out within a couple of weeks. A rare tune.....Top one nice one.....???
