Troubled Youth – Troubled Youth (1992) Album Review Alright, so let’s talk about Troubled Youth, the self-titled debut album by this Canadian rock band that came out in ‘92. It’s one of those raw, unfiltered records where you can practically hear the sweat dripping off the instruments. With a mix of hardcore, heavy metal, and punk vibes, it’s not trying to be polished or perfect—and honestly, that’s what makes it stick. Released under their own label (because who needs the suits?), this album is DIY chaos at its finest. The lineup’s tight but scrappy: Mart handles vocals, acoustic guitar, and drums (yeah, multitasking king right here), Terry shreds on electric guitar and shares vocal duties, Frank holds down the bass like his life depends on it. Together, they sound like a garage band that accidentally stumbled into greatness. Now, onto the tracks. There are some bangers here, but two really stand out for me. First up, “Mindless Minds.” This tune hits hard with its punchy riffs and pissed-off energy. The lyrics feel like a middle finger to conformity, and I swear every time I listen to it, I wanna grab a mic and scream along. It’s short, sharp, and leaves a mark—kinda like getting elbowed in the ribs during a mosh pit. You know? Then there’s “Quand C’est L’Hiver,” which throws a curveball because, well, it’s got French lyrics. Not something you expect from a hardcore punk-leaning album, right? But damn if it doesn’t work. The melody has this haunting vibe, almost like winter itself is creeping up on you while the guitars crunch away. Plus, the title cracks me up—it’s just fun saying "Quand C’est L’Hiver" out loud. Try it. Go ahead. Other songs like “Life’s A Bitch” and “Mascarade” keep the momentum going, though nothing quite tops those two tracks for me. Oh, and how could I forget “The Little Green Mutant Comedian Frog”? Like...what?! That title alone deserves an award for creativity. No clue what the song’s about, but hey, sometimes weirdness wins. Reflecting on this album, it’s wild to think it came out over 30 years ago. Back then, these guys were probably just messing around, making music for themselves without caring much about trends or fame. And yet, here we are still talking about it. Maybe that’s the magic of Troubled Youth. They weren’t chasing hits—they were just being real. Final thought? If aliens ever invade Earth and ask us to explain human emotion through music, I’d hand them this album. Then again, maybe I’d also include a disclaimer: “Warning: May cause spontaneous headbanging.”
