Various - A Package Of 16 Big Hits

Review by Pamela Willis

A Package Of 16 Big Hits: A Timeless Slice of Soul and Early R Released in 1963, A Package Of 16 Big Hits by Various is a treasure trove of soulful grooves and early R&B magic. This Canadian release on the iconic Motown label brings together some of the most memorable tracks from an era when music was raw, heartfelt, and unapologetically human. With genres spanning R&B, Funk/Soul, and styles rooted in classic Soul and Early R&B, this compilation feels like flipping through a photo album of sound—each track capturing a moment that still resonates today. The design credit goes to Bernard Yeszin, whose work likely gave the album its visual charm, while Ray Scott’s liner notes add context to the musical journey within. But let’s be real—it’s the songs themselves that steal the show. Take "Please Mr. Postman" for example. You’ve probably heard it before, maybe in passing on an oldies station or sampled somewhere unexpected. The urgency in the vocals paired with that driving rhythm creates a sense of longing that sticks with you long after the needle lifts off the record. It's not just about waiting for a letter; it’s about yearning—for connection, for answers, for something more. That universal theme makes it timeless. Then there’s "Money (That's What I Want)." If ever there was a track that summed up both desire and frustration, this is it. The sparse instrumentation lets the lyrics take center stage, hammering home the idea that money might not buy happiness, but it sure as heck buys options. There’s something almost cheeky about how straightforward the message is, yet it’s delivered with enough swagger to make you nod your head and think twice about your bank account all at once. What strikes me most about this collection isn’t just the quality of the hits—it’s the repetition. Tracks like "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow," "Your Heart Belongs To Me," and others appear multiple times throughout the album. At first glance, it seems odd, even lazy. But if you sit with it, it starts to feel intentional, almost like these songs are recurring thoughts or feelings circling back around in life. Love, heartbreak, ambition—they don’t just happen once. They linger, they repeat, they echo. One thing worth noting is how seamless the transitions between genres feel. Sure, we’re talking about Soul and Early R&B here, but there’s a funkiness woven into tracks like "Come And Get These Memories" that hints at what was coming next in popular music. It’s like peeking into a moment where everything is shifting but hasn’t quite settled yet. In the end, A Package Of 16 Big Hits isn’t perfect. Some might argue it’s overstuffed or repetitive. But perfection isn’t really the point, is it? This album is less about polish and more about passion—a snapshot of a time when musicians weren’t afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves. Listening to it now feels like finding an old mixtape tucked away in a drawer. Familiar, maybe a little worn, but full of stories waiting to be rediscovered. And honestly? If someone handed me a copy of this album tomorrow, I’d probably spend hours trying to figure out which track I’d want stuck in my head forever. Maybe that says more about me than the music, but hey—that’s the power of a good record, right?

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *A Package Of 16 Big Hits* by Various artists, released in 1963 in Canada, is a Motown gem. It’s packed with soulful tracks that blend genres like R&B, funk, and early soul. One interesting tidbit? The album features multiple versions of the same songs. For example, both "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" and "Your Heart Belongs to Me" appear twice. Was this a mix-up or a deliberate choice to showcase different takes? Who knows! But it makes the album feel like a treasure hunt for music lovers. Plus, it’s got classics like "Please Mr. Postman" and "You’ve Really Got A Hold on Me," which still resonate today. Props to designer Bernard Yeszin and liner notes writer Ray Scott for giving it that extra touch of charm.

Great singer but sounded a lot like Jackie Wilson which probably hurt recording career. Great lyricist
