Review by Brent Wallace

Sahara Club Attack: A Wild Ride Through 1983’s Neon-Lit Beats Let’s get one thing straight—Sahara Club Attack is not your average album. Released in 1983 by Virgin Records out of Hong Kong, this eclectic mixtape (yeah, we’re calling it that) feels like someone threw a bunch of genres into a blender and hit “puree.” Compiled by Steve Beaver, it’s part pop, part electronic, with techno vibes running through its veins. And honestly? It works. Mostly. The tracklist reads like a fever dream playlist from an alternate universe where Saturday night never ends. You’ve got bangers like “Our House” rubbing shoulders with deep cuts like “AEIOU Sometimes Y,” which sounds exactly as quirky as the title suggests. But if I had to pick two tracks that stuck with me after spinning this record, they’d be “I Like Chopin (Instrumental Version)” and “(Keep Feeling) Fascination.” Now, let’s talk about “I Like Chopin.” If you’re expecting some stuffy classical homage, think again. This instrumental version strips things down to pure mood—a pulsing beat layered over haunting piano chords. It’s kinda genius how it takes something so iconic and flips it into a dancefloor anthem. Every time I hear those opening notes, I’m transported back to smoky clubs lit only by strobe lights and bad decisions. It’s the kind of song that makes you nod along even when you’re alone at home washing dishes. Weird flex, but okay. Then there’s “(Keep Feeling) Fascination.” Oh man, this one hits different. The synths are sharp enough to cut glass, and the vocals have this hypnotic quality that just pulls you in. There’s a moment midway through where everything drops out except for this driving bassline—it’s like the music dares you to stop moving. Spoiler alert: you won’t. This track screams ‘80s excess while somehow still feeling timeless. Like neon leg warmers or shoulder pads, it shouldn’t work—but damn, does it ever. What really gets me about Sahara Club Attack is how unapologetically chaotic it feels. Tracks like “Red Red Wine” sit next to “Hip Hop, Be Bop (Don’t Stop),” and instead of clashing, they create this weird harmony. It’s like walking into a party where everyone’s dancing to their own rhythm, but somehow, it all syncs up. Maybe that’s why it was compiled in Hong Kong—a city known for blending cultures and styles into something entirely new. But here’s the kicker: listening to this album now feels almost nostalgic for a future that never quite happened. Imagine a world where techno-pop ruled supreme, where every club played “Sayonara” as the sun came up. Or maybe don’t imagine it—just press play on Sahara Club Attack and let Steve Beaver guide you through his vision of what could’ve been. Final thought? This album might not change your life, but it’ll definitely make your next road trip way more interesting. Just try not to laugh when “AEIOU Sometimes Y” comes on—you’ve been warned.

I had looked for this music. I heard this music in Sakamoto's music program "Sound Street” when I was in Japan. I thought it Sakamoto's work at that time, but I missed it applox. 30 years.
