Explode Together: The Dub Experiments 78-80 – A Sonic Time Capsule Worth Revisiting XTC’s Explode Together: The Dub Experiments 78-80 isn’t your run-of-the-mill electronic album. Released in 1991 under Virgin Records, this collection feels like a treasure chest of experimental dub that somehow bridges eras and continents—from Japan to Europe to the UK. With its fingerprints all over genres like dub and experimental music, it’s no surprise that this record has aged into something oddly timeless. The creative force behind the project is unmistakable: Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding share writing credits across most tracks, while John Leckie—yes, the John Leckie—sits in the producer’s chair. Add to that the quirky design work credited to “The Clinic’s Art Messengers,” and you’ve got an album steeped in personality. It’s not just music; it’s a vibe. Now let’s get into some standout moments. One track I keep coming back to is “Shore Leave Ornithology (Another 1950).” This one sticks because it blends whimsical storytelling with layered soundscapes that feel both retro and futuristic. Imagine being on a beach at sunset but also floating through space—that’s what this song does to your brain. The way Partridge crafts these sonic worlds makes you wonder if he was part musician, part mad scientist. Another gem is “Steam Fist Futurist.” If ever there was a track that sounded like machines dreaming, this would be it. Its pulsating beats and eerie undertones make for a hypnotic listen. You can almost picture gears grinding in slow motion as the melody unfolds. What sets Explode Together apart from other albums of its kind is how unapologetically raw it feels. Sure, it’s polished enough to hold up decades later, but there’s a scrappy charm here—a sense that XTC didn’t care much about trends or expectations. They were chasing something bigger, more personal. And honestly? That’s refreshing. One thing worth noting is how collaborative yet distinct the contributions are. Partridge brings his signature wit and idiosyncratic lyricism, especially shining on tracks like “Cairo” and “Madhattan,” where every word seems carefully chosen yet effortlessly delivered. Meanwhile, Moulding adds depth with his knack for crafting grooves that linger long after the song ends (“Beat The Bible” comes to mind). If I had to nitpick, maybe the pacing drags slightly toward the middle—but even then, it’s hard to call it a flaw when each track offers something unique. Maybe that’s why this album works so well—it doesn’t try too hard to fit any mold. It simply exists, daring listeners to meet it halfway. Wrapping up, Explode Together: The Dub Experiments 78-80 might not change your life overnight, but it will leave you thinking. Thinking about how far music can stretch itself without breaking. Thinking about what happens when artists toss out the rulebook and just… create. Oh, and here’s a random thought: if aliens ever landed on Earth looking for examples of human creativity, handing them this album wouldn’t be the worst idea. Just saying.

Regular line-up was Andy Partridge (guitar & vocals), Colin Moulding (bass & vocals), Barry Andrews (keyboards, left in 1979), Dave Gregory (guitar & keyboards, left in 1999) and Terry Chambers (drums, left in 1983).

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Explode Together: The Dub Experiments 78-80* by XTC is a hidden gem in the world of experimental music. It was released in 1991 but features tracks recorded much earlier, between 1978 and 1980. The band took inspiration from dub and electronic styles, creating a sound that feels both retro and ahead of its time. Andy Partridge, one of the masterminds behind it, not only wrote most of the songs but also contributed to the album's design. Fun fact—tracks like "Shore Leave Ornithology" and "We Kill The Beast" show off their knack for quirky, thought-provoking titles. It’s wild how this record quietly blends genres while showcasing XTC’s creative experimentation.

Is this a track from the album with John Leckie? Are these from Go 2 sessions?

It doesn't matter what speed you play Go+ or The Lure of Salvage. I love them both! Who knows if Andy and John Leckie even recorded them at this speed?
Thanks for sharing!

This is by far the most accessible song on the LP. Most of it is like Metal Machine Music. New. Broom is awesome as well.

John Peel accidentally played this on 33 and a 3rd rpm on his radio program without realizing it was supposed to be played at 45 rpm.
