Ayria - Hunger

Review by Eduardo Solana

Alright, let’s dive into Hunger, the 2012 synth-pop banger by Ayria. If you’re into that moody, electronic vibe with a dash of pop sparkle, this album is totally worth your time. Released under Not On Label (self-released) in Canada and Alfa Matrix in Belgium, it’s got this raw yet polished feel—like Ayria knew exactly what she was doing but still kept things real. First off, the title track “Hunger” hits hard. It’s one of those songs where the beat grabs you right away, and before you know it, you’re nodding along like some kind of electro-puppet. The synths are lush, almost cinematic, but there’s an edge to them—a bit gritty, kinda haunting. You can tell Ayria poured her soul into this one. I remember it because it feels like late-night driving music, the kind that makes you think about life while zoning out on the highway. Or maybe that’s just me? Another standout is… well, honestly, I don’t have the full tracklist memorized, but there’s this other tune (let’s call it Track X for now) that sticks with me. It’s slower, more introspective, and Ayria’s vocals are front and center. Her voice has this cool mix of vulnerability and strength—it’s like she’s letting you in on a secret but daring you to judge her at the same time. That contrast? Super compelling. What I love most about Hunger is how unapologetically itself it is. There’s no trying to fit into trends or please everyone. Instead, it carves out its own space in the synth-pop world, blending Canadian chill with Belgian precision. And yeah, sure, 2012 wasn’t yesterday, but good music doesn’t really age, y’know? Random thought: Listening to this album feels like eating dark chocolate—bittersweet, intense, and kinda addictive. Weird analogy? Maybe. But hey, art makes you think weird things sometimes. Give Hunger a spin if you haven’t already. Just don’t blame me if you end up craving more.

Ayria is generally considered gothic industrial. More likely to find goth kids and rivet heads listening to her stuff. Good artist ,puts on a kick butt live show and is a genuine sweetheart. Less edm than ebm if you're gonna toss it in either grouping.
Where find similar music ? Electropop+EBM ? Never heard such. I don't need stupid (sorry, but it's true) mainstream EDM music ! I prefer with female voice, i don't like non extreme male vocal with few exceptions. P.S. In my oppinion, female vocals goes better with futurepop and synthpop music.

Do a search on FB for "Leland City Club."

This is a good-sized goth club in Detroit. They post their playlists a lot. It has helped me find new music.
