Album Review: Metempsychosis – The Unheard Music by Blair Petrie Blair Petrie’s Metempsychosis – The Unheard Music is a sprawling, audacious experiment that defies easy categorization. Released in 2019 under the Canadian label Obfuscate Perimeter Records, this album spans genres like Rock and Electronic while flirting with styles as diverse as Experimental Art Rock, Avantgarde Noise, and Indie Rock. It’s not just an album—it’s an experience, one that challenges listeners to rethink what music can be. And honestly? Sometimes it feels like too much. But isn’t that kind of the point? The tracklist reads like a fever dream, packed with titles so bizarre they stick in your brain long after the music ends. Take “Locked In The Closet With Grandma’s Corpse (Liquescent Subjugation)” for example. This song is... something else. From its ominous opening tones to its unsettling crescendo of distorted synths and guttural vocals, it grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. There’s no clear narrative here—just raw emotion dripping through every note. You’re left wondering if Blair Petrie had some unresolved family trauma or if he just really likes weird metaphors. Either way, it works. Then there’s “Do The Dance! Do The Dance!”—a chaotic burst of energy that flips between manic beats and off-kilter melodies. If you’ve ever wanted to dance at a rave but also feel slightly terrified, this is your jam. The repetition of the title phrase becomes hypnotic, almost mocking, as though Petrie himself is daring you to keep up. By the end, you’re either exhausted or exhilarated—or both. I couldn’t decide which camp I fell into, but I do know I played it three times in a row. What makes Metempsychosis stand out isn’t just its sonic ambition; it’s how unapologetically messy it is. Tracks like “Pamela” and “Melissa (LA Song)” showcase quieter moments, almost tender in their delivery, while others like “God Of Love Return” explode into cacophonous noise without warning. It’s uneven, sure, but that unpredictability keeps you hooked. You never quite know what’s coming next, and frankly, that’s refreshing in an era where algorithms dictate playlists. One thing worth noting is the sheer scope of this project. With over 30 tracks clocking in at well over two hours, it’s less of an album and more of a labyrinthine journey. Some songs hit harder than others, and a few could probably have been left on the cutting room floor. But editing has never been the forte of experimental artists, right? Still, when Petrie nails it—as he does on standout tracks—he proves why taking risks matters. In reflecting on Metempsychosis, I found myself thinking about how rare it is to encounter art that genuinely feels alive. This album isn’t perfect, but it doesn’t want to be. Instead, it thrives on imperfection, chaos, and the thrill of discovery. Listening to it feels like stepping into someone else’s subconscious—a place equal parts fascinating and disorienting. And hey, maybe that’s the secret sauce. Because despite its flaws—or perhaps because of them—this record sticks with you. Days later, I still catch myself humming bits of “Do The Dance!” under my breath. Or was it “Centrifugal”? Honestly, who even knows anymore. Final thought: If you’re looking for background music for your coffee shop playlist, this ain’t it. But if you want to dive headfirst into a musical rabbit hole unlike anything else out there, give Metempsychosis a spin. Just don’t say we didn’t warn ya.
