Album Review: Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood / No Me Malinterpretes by The Costello Show Alright, so here’s the deal—this album from 1986 might not be on everyone’s radar, but man, it deserves some love. Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood / No Me Malinterpretes by The Costello Show is this quirky little gem that blends rock with a pop-rock twist. And yeah, it came out of Spain on F-Beat Records. It’s got this raw charm to it, like someone just said, "Let’s make something cool and not overthink it." Spoiler alert: they nailed it. First off, let’s talk about the tracks. I mean, how could you not start with the title track? “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood = No Me Malinterpretes” hits hard right outta the gate. Like, you can tell Elvis Costello (yeah, Declan Patrick Aloysius MacManus if we’re getting fancy) put his heart into this one. The lyrics are kinda pleading but in a way that feels real—not cheesy or overdone. Plus, doing it bilingual? Bold move, dude. Totally works though. Every time I hear those Spanish verses kick in, it’s like, whoa, this guy gets it. He’s bridging cultures without making it feel forced. Then there’s “Baby’s Got A Brand New Hairdo.” This one sticks in your head for all the right reasons. It’s upbeat, cheeky as hell, and has this riff that makes you wanna tap your foot even when you’re stuck in traffic. Honestly, I think it’s the kind of song people would blast at parties back in the day and just vibe to without really thinking too much about what it means. But hey, sometimes music doesn’t need deep meaning—it just needs to slap, ya know? The production creds go to T-Bone Burnett, which explains why everything sounds tight yet still kinda loose, like they didn’t polish the life out of it. Shoutout to Mike Krage for the design and Y. Yoneda for the photography too because, honestly, the visuals match the vibe perfectly. It’s simple, clean, and doesn’t try too hard—just like the music itself. Here’s the thing about this album—it’s not gonna blow your mind with groundbreaking innovation or anything. But maybe that’s why I dig it. It’s unpretentious, fun, and reminds me that good music doesn’t always have to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes it just rolls along smoothly and lets you enjoy the ride. Oh, random thought—I wonder if anyone ever covered “Baby’s Got A Brand New Hairdo” and turned it into a hair salon anthem. If not, someone should totally do that. Just saying.

Great vocal! I read in Costello’s autobiography that he had laryngitis when recording this vocal. Still sounds great
