Dick Curless - A Tombstone Every Mile

Review by JD Schroeder

A Tombstone Every Mile: Dick Curless’ Country Gem That Still Kicks Up Dust If you're a fan of country music that feels like a warm handshake from the past, A Tombstone Every Mile by Dick Curless is one heck of an album to sink your teeth into. Released in 1995 but brimming with timeless Americana vibes, this record feels like flipping through a dusty photo album found at a yard sale—each track has its own story, some sweet and others sharp enough to make you wince. Curless isn’t just singing; he’s painting pictures with his voice. And while there are over 100 tracks here (yeah, you read that right), two songs really stuck out for me: “Tombstone Every Mile” and “No Fool Like An Old Fool.” Let’s dive in. --- “Tombstone Every Mile” – A Song That Feels Like Home This title track hits hard because it’s got grit without trying too hard. It’s not flashy or polished—it’s raw as hell, kinda like how life used to be before everyone had a smartphone glued to their hand. The lyrics reel you in like a fish on a line: every mile marker tells a tale of loss, love, or regret. You can almost picture Curless driving down some lonesome highway, wind whipping through his hair (or what’s left of it). What makes this song unforgettable? Maybe it’s the way Curless’ gravelly voice cracks on certain notes, like he’s lived every word he’s singing. Or maybe it’s how the melody sneaks up on you, wrapping itself around your heart so tight you don’t want it to let go. Whatever it is, it works. This tune reminds me why we listen to country music in the first place—to feel something real. --- “No Fool Like An Old Fool” – Heartbreak, But Make It Catchy Now, if you’ve ever been burned by love—or even just scorched a little—you’ll get this one. It’s classic country storytelling at its finest: simple yet devastating. The chorus sticks to your brain like syrup on pancakes, which is both a blessing and a curse because suddenly you’re humming about being played for a sucker while waiting in line at the grocery store. But here’s the kicker—it doesn’t wallow in self-pity. Instead, it’s more like a shrug and a wink, like Curless is saying, “Yeah, I messed up, but ain’t we all fools once in a while?” There’s a twangy guitar riff running underneath that gives it a playful edge, balancing out the sadness. By the end, you’re not mad at the guy who broke your heart anymore—you’re laughing along with Curless, shaking your head at the absurdity of it all. --- Why This Album Still Matters Produced by George Richey and mastered by Bob Irwin, A Tombstone Every Mile isn’t just another throwback collection—it’s a treasure chest of forgotten gems. With releases across the US, Germany, and Canada via labels like Capitol Records and Bear Family Records, it’s clear this album was meant to travel far and wide. And honestly? It deserves every bit of attention it gets. Listening to these tracks feels like stepping back in time, but not in a cheesy retro kind of way. It’s more like hearing echoes of stories told by people who aren’t afraid to show their scars. Sure, some songs might feel repetitive after a while (seriously, 100+ tracks is no joke), but when they hit, they hit. --- Final Thoughts… Or Not Here’s the thing about A Tombstone Every Mile: it’s overwhelming in the best possible way. Just when you think you’ve heard everything, another track pops up and surprises you. It’s like finding loose change in the couch cushions of your soul. And hey, if nothing else, this album proves that sometimes the road less traveled is also the bumpiest—but dang, does it make for a good ride. So grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and let Dick Curless take you on a journey. Who knows? You might find yourself humming “China Nights” long after the last note fades away. Oh, and one last thing—don’t blame me if you start craving jelly doughnuts halfway through. Some cravings just can’t be explained.

My grandparents raised me in the country hits radio stations through the late 90's/early-mid 2000's. I wish they were still here to ask; I'm sure they would recognize & appreciate ?❤️
