Erra - Neon

Neon by Erra: A Wild Ride Through Metal and Beyond Alright, so let’s talk about Neon, the 2018 album from Erra that hit like a punch to the gut in all the best ways. If you’re into genres like Pop/Rock, Metal, or just plain heavy stuff with some brains behind it, this one’s for you. It’s got everything—Heavy Metal riffs, Progressive Metal twists, Alternative/Indie Rock vibes, and even some Metalcore grit. Basically, it’s a genre blender, but somehow it works. First off, Sumerian Records always seems to back projects with serious edge, and Neon is no exception. You can tell Nick Walters (A&R) had faith in this thing because it feels polished yet raw at the same time. The artwork? Props to Mete Yafet—it’s simple but sticks with you. And Taylor Larson killing it on mixing and mastering? Dude deserves a raise. Now onto the tracks. I’ll keep it real—I didn’t vibe with every song right away, but there are two standouts that still loop in my head months later: “Signal Fire” and “Hyperreality.” “Signal Fire” kicks things off with this gnarly riff that feels like your car engine revving up before takeoff. Jesse Cash and JT Cavey nailed the lyrics here; they’re emotional without being cheesy. There’s this part where the vocals shift between clean and scream—it gives me goosebumps every time. It’s not just noise; it’s storytelling, man. Then there’s “Hyperreality,” which sounds exactly like its name—a chaotic trip through layers of sound. This track is wild because it starts with this creeping build-up, almost like walking into a dark room not knowing what’s waiting for you. Then BAM, the breakdown hits, and suddenly you’re headbanging whether you meant to or not. Beau Burchell really outdid himself recording this gem. It’s intricate but never overdone, kinda like a puzzle you wanna solve again and again. Other songs like “Valhalla” and “Expiate” bring their own heat too, but those two tracks stuck with me most. They’re proof that Erra knows how to balance aggression with melody, making something that’s both brutal and beautiful. Here’s the kicker though—if you’re expecting straight-up metal madness throughout, you might get thrown off. Tracks like “Unify” lean more alt-rock, and honestly? That threw me at first. But after a few listens, it made sense. Erra wasn’t trying to box themselves into one style—they were experimenting, pushing boundaries. And yeah, sometimes experiments flop, but these guys mostly pull it off. Reflecting on Neon, it’s clear Erra poured their hearts into this project. It’s ambitious as hell, and while not every moment lands perfectly, the highs outweigh the lows big time. Plus, fun fact: Andrew Jarrin and Cory Hajde managed these dudes, and if anyone could wrangle such a diverse group of musicians, it’s them. So yeah, give Neon a spin if you haven’t already. Just don’t expect perfection—expect passion, intensity, and maybe a headache from all the headbanging. Oh, and next time someone tells you metal can’t be smart? Play them this album. Their face will say it all.

About Erra

ERRA is a progressive Metalcore band from Birmingham, Alabama. Since their formation in 2009, they have self-released 2 EPs, titled ERRA and Andromeda. They went on to sign with Tragic Hero Records and release their debut album Impulse in 2011. Their second album, Augment, which was released 2 years later, reached number 1 on the ARIA heatseekers chart. It was the album that started to see them gain a lot more traction, and consequently was the only other record to be released under the label. After becoming more successful with Augment, ERRA signed with Sumerian Records and released their 3rd EP titled Moments of Clarity. This EP is the first release to not feature unclean vocalist and co-founding member, Garrison Lee. It is also the first release to not feature guitarist and co-founding member, Alan Rigdon. Shortly before the EP was released, ERRA recruited a replacement vocalist, Ian Eubanks to perform on the record and subsequently become the new frontman. After the release of Moments of Clarity - as early as December 2014, guitarist Jesse Cash began working on the next record, their vocalist also started to write lyrics for the album. In August 2015, Ian Eubanks decided to step down as unclean vocalist, stating that he struggled to perform his vocal parts during touring, and that he was no longer able to scream correctly. Consequently, ERRA once again was on the search for another unclean vocalist. The new vocalist JT Cavey (ex-vocalist for Texas in July) was announced through the release of the lead single Luminesce for their upcoming record Drift, released in April 2016. The band remained with Sumerian Records for their 2018 album Neon before signing with UNFD for the release of their self-titled album in 2021. The band's 2018 album, Neon, is a rehash of their previous releases with eight string guitars.
