Canadian Bacon: A Wild Ride Through Elmer and Peter Bernstein’s Sonic Wonderland If you’re a fan of soundtracks that feel like they’ve been plucked straight outta some alternate universe where Canada is the center of global espionage (yes, really), then Canadian Bacon by Elmer Bernstein and Peter Bernstein might just be your new jam. Released under Quartet Records, this Stage & Screen score album feels like an over-the-top spy thriller mashed up with quirky comedy—and honestly? It works. The whole thing kicks off with “War Room,” which immediately sets the tone for what’s to come. Imagine walking into a dimly lit room full of people in suits arguing about maple syrup tariffs—or maybe something more serious, like world domination. The track has this tense energy, all pulsing strings and brass hits that make you sit up straighter in your chair. You can almost picture John Candy storming in with pancakes and chaos. And let me tell ya, once those horns kick in, there’s no turning back. This isn’t just background music; it’s a character in its own right. Then there’s “Hockey/Stu’s Idea/Stu’s Speech.” Oh man, this one sticks with me because it's got layers—kinda like a good poutine. It starts off bouncy and playful, like someone trying to explain why hockey fights are totally reasonable while waving their arms around dramatically. Then BAM!—it shifts gears into something kinda inspirational when Stu drops his big speech moment. By the end, I swear you’ll half expect everyone in the scene to break into synchronized skating routines. It’s goofy but oddly moving at the same time, like watching a dog wear glasses for the first time. Now, sure, not every track on here hits as hard as those two—but that’s okay. Tracks like “Omega Force One/Omega Force Two/Conditions Of Canada” and “Toronto/Honey Shoots” keep things interesting enough without stealing the spotlight. They’re like the sidekicks who show up late to the party but still bring chips and dip. And hey, who doesn’t love chips and dip? What makes Canadian Bacon stand out isn’t just how well-crafted each piece is—it’s the sheer audacity of it all. Listening through feels like flipping channels between a James Bond movie, a Saturday morning cartoon, and a very Canadian tourism ad. There’s humor, drama, suspense… heck, even a little romance if you squint hard enough. It’s messy in the best way possible, like someone threw a bunch of maple leaves and spy gadgets into a blender and hit puree. So yeah, if you’re looking for a soundtrack that takes itself too seriously, this ain’t it. But if you want something that sounds like Elmer and Peter Bernstein had a blast making it—and trust me, they did—you need to check this out. Honestly, after listening to this album, I now kinda believe Canada could take over the world. Just give ‘em a few more moose and maybe another Tim Hortons or two. Oh, and before I forget—one last thing: whoever decided to name a song “Dies First/Hacking” deserves a medal. Pure genius.
