Review by Zach Smith

EP by Emil Nyman: A Swedish Sonic Adventure That’ll Mess With Your Head (In a Good Way) Let’s cut to the chase—Emil Nyman’s 2016 EP isn’t your run-of-the-mill electronic release. It’s more like that quirky friend who shows up uninvited but ends up being the life of the party. Released under Kalvaberget Records, this little gem from Sweden dives deep into tech house, techno, and experimental vibes. And trust me, it doesn’t just dip its toes—it cannonballs straight in. The credits are tight: Lacquer Cut By - JAN (shoutout to Jan for not messing this up) and Mastered By - Bo (whoever Bo is, they deserve a raise). The tracklist? Solid AF. You’ve got “L’Inconnue De La Seine,” “Her Steps,” “Keplar,” “Phylum,” and “Pinepple” (yes, with two Ps because why not?). But let’s zoom in on two tracks that stuck with me like gum on a shoe. First off, “L’Inconnue De La Seine.” If you’re wondering what kind of name that is, Google it—it’s wild. This track feels like walking through an art gallery where all the paintings are slightly melting. The beat builds so subtly you almost don’t notice until BAM, you’re fully submerged in this hypnotic groove. It’s moody without being pretentious, which is harder than it sounds. I kept replaying it, partly because I couldn’t figure out how he pulled it off and partly because my cat seemed weirdly into it. Then there’s “Pinepple.” Who names a techno track after fruit? Emil Nyman, apparently. And honestly, good call. This one’s got a bouncy rhythm that makes you want to dance like no one’s watching—even if someone definitely is. There’s something about the way the synths spiral around each other that feels both chaotic and controlled, like trying to juggle pineapples while riding a unicycle. Spoiler alert: You can’t, but man, wouldn’t it be fun to try? What really sets this EP apart is its refusal to play it safe. Tech house can sometimes feel formulaic, but Nyman throws curveballs left and right. He’s not afraid to experiment, even if it means risking a few awkward moments along the way. Honestly, it’s refreshing as hell. So yeah, Emil Nyman delivered something special here—a record that’s equal parts brainy and bouncy. Listening to it felt like getting lost in Stockholm at midnight, only to stumble upon some underground club blasting music that changes your whole perspective. Or maybe that was just me vibing too hard. Either way, hats off to Nyman and his team for crafting an EP that lingers long after the last note fades. Oh, and one final thought: If pineapple pizza had a soundtrack, this would probably be it. Food for thought.
