Album Review: Earth by Fumio Miyashita – A Timeless Ambient Journey Released in 1983 under the Japanese label Animage, Earth by Fumio Miyashita is a quiet masterpiece that feels like stepping into another world. It’s one of those albums where you don’t just listen to the music—you live inside it for a while. Falling firmly in the ambient and new age genres, this record blends electronic textures with organic emotion, creating something both futuristic and deeply human. Miyashita wears all the hats here—he composed, arranged, performed, and played every instrument on the album. That level of personal involvement gives Earth an intimacy that’s rare even today. The result? Tracks that feel less like songs and more like moments frozen in time. Let’s zoom in on two standout tracks. First up, “Wave From East.” This piece hits differently—it opens with these soft, pulsing synths that feel like sunlight breaking through clouds. Then comes this gentle rhythm, almost like waves lapping at the shore. You can tell Miyashita wasn’t just making music; he was painting pictures with sound. It’s no wonder this track sticks with me—it’s meditative but not boring, simple yet layered enough to keep your attention. Then there’s “Heart Beat.” If you’re looking for warmth, this is it. The track builds slowly, starting with what sounds like distant echoes before introducing a heartbeat-like pulse (yep, clever naming). Listening to it feels like being wrapped in a cozy blanket—calming but also kinda profound. There’s something about how the melody unfolds that makes you stop whatever you’re doing. I mean, who doesn’t need a moment like that now and then? The rest of the album follows suit, offering gems like “Dawn,” which captures the fragile beauty of early mornings, and “Creation,” which feels like watching stars form outta nothingness. Each track flows seamlessly into the next, making the whole thing feel cohesive without ever getting repetitive. What strikes me most about Earth is its ability to transport you somewhere else entirely. Whether you’re zoning out after a long day or diving deep into creative work, this album has got your back. And honestly, it’s wild to think this came out nearly four decades ago—it still sounds fresh, maybe because we’ve never stopped needing music that soothes the soul. Here’s the kicker though: as much as Earth feels universal, it’s also deeply tied to its creator. Knowing that Miyashita did everything himself adds this extra layer of admiration. Like, dude didn’t just make an album—he crafted a little universe. Hats off to him for pulling that off. So yeah, if you haven’t heard Earth, do yourself a favor and give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if you end up losing hours lost in its dreamy vibes. Oh, and fun fact? Apparently, this album was inspired partly by Miyashita’s love for nature. Makes sense when you hear it—you can practically smell the ocean breeze in some parts. Nature lover or not, this one’s worth your time.

About Fumio

Fumio Miyashita (sometimes known as simply Fumio) was a staggeringly prolific yet largely unheralded new age artist from Japan. Fans of Japanese psychedelia know Miyashita best as a founding member of Far Out and Far East Family Band, two pioneering progressive/space rock bands that existed during the mid-'70s. Like Far East Family Band's most well-known member, Kitaro, Miyashita began making solo electronic music and composing soundtracks after the group broke up around 1977. Eventually he started making music specifically focused on healing, meditation, therapy, and sleep, and released over a hundred albums, which sold well in his native country.
