Gello - Fruits Of Knowledge

Review by Camille Barbee Olmstead

Fruits Of Knowledge by Gello: A Raw, Thought-Provoking Journey Through Conscious Hip Hop Man, Fruits Of Knowledge by Gello is one of those albums that just sneaks up on you. Released back in '95 under Enneagram Records, this project doesn’t scream for attention—it whispers, then grabs your soul. It’s conscious hip hop at its core, the kind of music that makes you nod your head while also scratching your brain. Produced by Jonathan Smith and Mitchell Bebbs (with some remix magic sprinkled in), it feels like a time capsule from an era when rap wasn’t afraid to get deep. Let me tell ya about two tracks that really stuck with me. First off, “Why You Got To Be A Gangster” hits different. Like, real talk—this song is haunting but so necessary. It's not preachy; it's more like Gello's having a conversation with you over beats that feel gritty yet smooth. The lyrics force you to think about choices, consequences, and how easy it is to fall into cycles we didn’t even see coming. Every word lands heavy, man. By the end, I felt like I’d been through something—a mix of guilt, clarity, and hope all rolled into three minutes. Then there’s “Nubian Princess.” Oh, this track? Pure vibes. If you’re looking for bars wrapped in respect and admiration, this is it. Gello flips the script here, dropping love and reverence for Black women without making it corny or forced. The beat rides perfectly, too—just enough bounce to keep your spirit lifted while the message sinks in. Honestly, hearing this track reminds me why conscious hip hop will always have a place in my heart. It’s celebratory, reflective, and empowering all at once. Now, credit where it’s due: Angello Adson co-produced this gem, and you can tell he brought his A-game. And let’s not forget the remixes on tracks 12 and 13 (“Get The Honey” and “Square Peg In The Round Hole”). Those versions slap hard—they give the originals a fresh twist, keeping things interesting if you're spinning the whole album. What gets me most about Fruits Of Knowledge is how timeless it feels. Even though it dropped nearly 30 years ago, the themes still resonate today. Gello wasn’t trying to reinvent the wheel—he was laying down truth, pain, joy, and wisdom in a way only conscious hip hop can. Listening to this record feels less like entertainment and more like sitting across from someone who’s lived life and wants to share what they’ve learned. Here’s the wild part, though: as much as this album made me think, it also left me wondering…where did Gello go? Why haven’t we heard more from him? Dude had stories to tell, and they weren’t just surface-level stuff. Maybe that’s the beauty of it—sometimes artists come, drop knowledge, and move on before we fully grasp their impact. Either way, Fruits Of Knowledge remains a hidden treasure worth revisiting again and again.
