Review by Linda Cade

Andrea Chénier: A Raw, Emotional Journey Through Love and Revolution If you’re into opera, or even if you’re just dipping your toes into the world of classical music, Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano is one of those albums that grabs you by the heartstrings and doesn’t let go. Released in 2011 under EMI Classics and Warner Classics, this recording features some heavy hitters like Maria Callas (soprano), Mario del Monaco (tenor), Aldo Protti (bass vocals), and an orchestra and chorus from Teatro Alla Scala di Milano led by conductor Antonino Votto. It’s a powerhouse performance with all the dramatic flair you’d expect from a Romantic-era opera. Now, I’ll be honest—I didn’t think I’d connect so deeply with something written over a century ago. But here we are. Two tracks stood out to me so much they’ve been stuck in my head for days: "La Mamma Morta" and "Nemico Della Patria?!" Let me tell ya why. --- First off, “La Mamma Morta.” Oh man, this track hits different. Sung by Maria Callas as Maddalena, it’s basically her pouring her soul out after losing everything—her family, her home, her dignity. When she sings about how her mother died protecting her during a raid, it feels personal. Like, REAL personal. You don’t need to understand every word (though the bonus disc has translations!) because Callas’ voice says it all. Her tone shifts between grief, anger, and this quiet determination that makes you want to cry and cheer at the same time. The way the strings swell behind her voice? Chills. Every. Single. Time. This isn’t singing—it’s storytelling on another level. Then there’s “Nemico Della Patria?!” which is like the polar opposite vibe but equally unforgettable. This is where Carlo Gérard accuses Andrea Chénier of being an enemy of the revolution. Mario del Monaco absolutely OWNS this scene. His voice booms with conviction, like he’s not just accusing someone—he’s fighting for justice, revenge, survival, all at once. And when the chorus joins in? Forget about it. It’s chaotic, intense, and kinda messy in the best possible way. You feel the tension crackling through your speakers. Honestly, I had to pause it halfway through because it was too overwhelming—but also too good to skip. --- What gets me most about this album is how alive it feels. Sure, it was recorded decades ago, but listening to it now, it’s like stepping into a packed theater in Milan, hearing these incredible voices echo through the air. The passion is raw, unfiltered, almost reckless. It’s not perfect—and maybe that’s why it works. These singers aren’t holding back; they’re giving everything they’ve got, and you can hear it in every note. And hey, fun fact: the bonus disc includes the libretto with translations in FIVE languages. So whether you’re team English, German, French, Spanish, or Italian, you’re covered. Plus, reading along adds this whole new layer to the experience. Suddenly, you realize just how poetic and heartbreaking the lyrics really are. --- Here’s the thing: Andrea Chénier isn’t just an opera—it’s a gut punch wrapped in beautiful music. Listening to it reminds me how powerful art can be, especially when it’s about love, loss, and standing up for what you believe in—even if it costs you everything. Final thought? If Maria Callas doesn’t make you ugly-cry at least once while listening to this, check your pulse. Something might be wrong. Album rating: 9.5/10 Standout tracks: "La Mamma Morta," "Nemico Della Patria?!" P.S. Fun reflection: After finishing this review, I realized I’ve started humming random bits of “La Mamma Morta” while doing chores. My cat looks concerned.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s an interesting fact: The album *Andrea Chénier* features the legendary Maria Callas in one of her iconic roles. Even though it was released in 2011, the recording dates back to a historic performance with the Teatro Alla Scala orchestra and chorus. It’s wild to think that listeners today can still experience the raw power of Callas’ voice alongside Mario del Monaco’s soaring tenor, all brought to life by conductor Antonino Votto. And bonus—it even comes with a disc full of translations for the libretto, making it accessible to fans worldwide. Not bad for an opera rooted in 19th-century Romanticism!

According to The Callas Legacy by John Ardoin, Maddelena de Coigny was another role learned by Callas in a matter of days. Originally, she an del Monaco were to have appeared in Il Trovatore, but the tenor asked that Andrea Chenier be substituted, and Callas agreed. The aria is sung with far more bite than for EMI. The B at its climax goes somewhat wild, but it does hit with force, and Callas follows it with further excitement by digging deeply into the final notes on the word "I'amor.

The contrast between the sweetness of "e Bersi buona e pura" and the tragedy in "di sua belleza, ha fatto un mercato, un contrato per me" is the highest of many high moments of this rendition. Intelligence, instinct, sincerity, musicianship, sheer artistry, it's all there. She repeats the effect in the following phrase, contrasting the despair of "porto sventura" with the suavity of "a chi bene me vole". What a consummate artist this woman was.

Listening to Callas has confirmed that I possess a soul .
Here, she sings with the intensity and passion of Joan of Arc going up in flames.
