Gregory Gray - Euroflake In Silverlake

Euroflake In Silverlake: A Raw, Unfiltered Ride Through 1969’s Psyche Alright, let’s get one thing straight—Gregory Gray’s Euroflake In Silverlake is not your run-of-the-mill pop-rock album. Released in ’69, this sucker slaps you awake with its mix of soft rock vibes and some seriously gritty storytelling. If you’re looking for polished perfection, go listen to The Beatles again. But if you want something that feels like a fever dream dipped in acid rain, this is your jam. The genres? Pop/Rock, Rock. Styles? Pop Rock, Soft Rock. Sounds tame on paper, but trust me, it ain’t. This record punches harder than it has any right to, especially when you dive into tracks like “I Don’t Know Who I Am” and “Coming Off Drugs.” These two cuts alone are worth the price of admission—and then some. Let’s talk about “I Don’t Know Who I Am” first. It’s messy as hell, both lyrically and musically. The vocals sound like they were recorded through a busted mic in someone’s basement, but damn if that doesn’t work here. There’s a raw honesty to the whole thing—a dude unraveling his own identity while the band just kinda lets chaos take over. You can practically feel the sweat dripping off everyone involved. And yeah, maybe the lyrics repeat themselves a bit too much, but isn’t that what losing your mind feels like? Repetitive, confusing, relentless. By the time it ends, you’re left wondering whether you should laugh or cry. Probably both. Then there’s “Coming Off Drugs,” which hits like a ton of bricks wrapped in velvet. It starts slow, almost soothing, lulling you into thinking everything’s cool. But then—BAM—it flips into this gnarly spiral of paranoia and regret. The guitars crunch just enough to keep things edgy, while the rhythm section keeps pounding away like a heartbeat you can’t ignore. Listening to this track feels like being inside someone else’s detox nightmare. Is it uncomfortable? Hell yeah. But it’s also unforgettable. And hey, props to EMI (and all their label aliases) for putting this out in both the Netherlands and the US. Back then, most labels would’ve shied away from something so unpolished, so gloriously imperfect. But nope, they rolled the dice on Gray, and we’re better off for it. Now, here’s the kicker: why does an album from 1969 still slap today? Maybe because life hasn’t changed all that much. People still lose themselves (“I Don’t Know Who I Am”), struggle with addiction (“Coming Off Drugs”), and question authority (“The Pope Does Not Smoke Dope”—seriously, what?). Or maybe it’s because Gregory Gray wasn’t trying to make art for the masses; he was making art for himself, warts and all. That kind of authenticity doesn’t age. So yeah, Euroflake In Silverlake might not be perfect, but who cares? Perfection’s boring anyway. What matters is how it makes you feel—and this record makes you feel alive, messed up, and oddly hopeful. Just don’t expect to walk away unchanged. Oh, and one last thought: whoever decided to name a song “Town With No Telephone” deserves a medal. Or a slap. Haven’t decided yet.

I have the cd somewhere. I can't believe the albums not on YouTube it's such a great album. I want to hear "I don't know who I am" right now! If I do have the disc I commit to posting it. I had two Gregory gray releases at one time but euroflake in silverlake is the bomb, like his Ziggy stardust... Just so good. I forever thank Kevin Pollack (sp?) Wherever you are for turning me on to him...

I just found out now about this tragic loss. I was introduced to Gregory Grey's music in the 1990's when someone shared his "Euroflake...." CD with me. I was immediately hooked. Then, after he seemingly disappeared from view, I found his alter ego Mary Cigarettes on Sound Cloud. I think he enjoyed the anonimity of Sound Cloud and and he often had inspiring things to say when those of us who were so obviously less talented had posted some music to the forum. He seemed as kind as he was adventurous. So sorry we lost him.

R.I.P Paul Lerwill!
