Ad Bourke - Prelude Ep

Review by Jonathan Rosemont

Alright, let’s dive into Ad Bourke’s Prelude EP, a little gem from 2013 that’s still worth talking about. This UK-born release on Five Fold is all about those electronic vibes, leaning heavy into house and deep house styles. If you’re into beats that feel like they’re hugging your brain while also making you wanna move, this one’s for you. Now, I gotta shout out two tracks here because they stuck with me in different ways. First up is the title track, “Prelude.” Man, this thing just sneaks up on you. It starts off kinda chill, like it’s easing you into the vibe without trying too hard. But then—boom!—the groove kicks in, and suddenly you’re vibing so hard you forget what day it is. The bassline? Super smooth. Like butter-on-a-hot-pan smooth. And there’s this subtle build-up that keeps you hooked, like waiting for the punchline of a really good joke. You know when a track feels like it was made specifically for late-night drives or staring out rainy windows? Yeah, that’s “Prelude” in a nutshell. Then there’s “A Night In Almeria,” which hits totally different but somehow fits right in. This one feels cinematic, like it could be the soundtrack to some moody indie film where the main character has an existential crisis at 3 AM. There’s this haunting melody running through it, paired with these crisp percussion hits that keep things grounded. Honestly, every time I hear it, I picture myself walking down a dimly lit street somewhere far away, maybe even in Almeria (wherever that is). It’s dreamy but not overly sentimental, if that makes sense. Like, it lets you fill in the blanks yourself instead of spoon-feeding you emotions. The other tracks, “Equinox” and “Astral,” are solid too, don’t get me wrong. They’ve got their own charm, especially if you’re digging the whole deep house aesthetic. But for me, “Prelude” and “A Night In Almeria” are the ones that stick around long after the music stops. You know what’s wild though? Listening to this EP now feels almost nostalgic, even though it came out less than ten years ago. Maybe it’s because deep house has evolved so much since then, or maybe it’s just how music can transport you back to certain moments in life. Either way, Prelude EP holds up surprisingly well. Kinda makes me wonder what Ad Bourke’s been up to lately. Hopefully more tunes as hypnotic as these! Oh, and random thought: wouldn’t it be cool if someone remixed “A Night In Almeria” with live saxophone? Just throwing that out there.

Heard this on point-blank FM. Sounds awesome. Reminds me of the work of 80's talented composer John Carpenter - films include Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York etc. I agree with @Sean Khan it definitely has an old school vibe with the new. Loving it at 3:25 and the sounds of synthesiser and bass. Magical! ??
