Jeff Simmons - Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up

Review by Jean Lozada

Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up: A Psychedelic Odyssey You Didn’t Know You Needed Alright, let’s talk about Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up by Jeff Simmons. This 2008 reissue is like that one eccentric friend who shows up uninvited but ends up being the life of the party. It’s got a little bit of everything—Prog-Rock weirdness, Electric Blues grit, Hard Rock punch, and even some Stage & Screen vibes if you squint hard enough. Released across countries like the UK, US, France, Germany, Canada (and hey, Ireland too), this album feels like it was destined to wander from record store to record store, collecting stories along the way. Now, I gotta say, diving into this thing felt like stepping into a time machine where someone forgot to set the destination. One moment you're cruising through "Appian Way," which kicks off with this groovy bassline courtesy of Simmons himself—it’s hypnotic, man. The kind of track that makes your head nod involuntarily while you’re pretending to be cool in public. Then BAM, there’s Frank Zappa shredding on lead guitar for “I’m in the Music Business.” Yeah, THE Frank Zappa. That guy doesn’t just play guitar; he wrestles it into submission. Every note feels like it's dripping with attitude and sass, like he knew exactly how badass he sounded. But here’s the kicker—what sticks with me most isn’t just the flashy stuff. No, it’s “Conversations With a Recluse” that really messed my mind up (pun intended). There’s something haunting yet oddly comforting about the way Simmons layers his vocals over those moody organ chords. Like, imagine sitting alone at 3 AM, staring out a rain-soaked window, questioning all your life choices—and then realizing the music perfectly matches your existential crisis. That’s this song. And honestly? I love it. The whole vibe of the album is kinda scrappy, like it was made by people who cared more about creating something real than polishing every edge until it sparkled. Chris Huston’s engineering gives it this raw, almost live feel, and let’s not forget John Williams’ design work—it’s simple but effective, like a well-worn leather jacket. Even the credits are wild; between Ron Woods shaking maracas and tambourines like his life depends on it, and Ian Underwood blowing sax like he’s channeling Coltrane via an acid trip, it’s clear no one phoned this in. Here’s the thing though—this album shouldn’t make sense. It jumps genres faster than a caffeinated squirrel, and yet somehow it works. Maybe it’s because Simmons wears so many hats here—he plays piano, accordion, bass, sings, writes lyrics… dude does everything. Or maybe it’s Herb Cohen’s product management keeping things vaguely coherent behind the scenes. Who knows? In the end, Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up feels less like an album and more like a fever dream you don’t want to wake up from. It’s messy, ambitious, and occasionally brilliant—a perfect snapshot of what happens when talented folks throw caution to the wind and just create. So next time you’re hunting for something different, give this a spin. Just don’t blame me if Lucille starts messing with your mind too. Oh, and P.S.—if anyone finds out why there are three different versions of “Conversations With a Recluse,” hit me up. My brain hurts trying to figure that one out.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s an interesting fact: *Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up*, the eclectic album by Jeff Simmons, is a treasure trove of musical variety. It blends genres like Prog-Rock, Psychedelic Rock, and Electric Blues, showcasing Simmons' versatility as a multi-instrumentalist—he played electric bass, piano, organ, accordion, and even sang! But here’s the kicker: Frank Zappa, the legendary guitarist, makes a guest appearance on two tracks, adding his signature flair to the mix. A considerable effort from this Zappa alumnus. Frank Zappa plays guitar on some of the tracks which makes it even more interesting. But Jeff Simmons and this very tight and talented band carry the day. Lots of great blues and rock cuts showcase Jeff Simmons as a strong songwriter as well as a very capable vocalist. Highlights of this exceptional album include "Appian Way", "Zondo Zondo (some Zappa influence here), the hard rocking "I'm In The Music Business", the bluesy "Raye" with Frank Zappa on lead guitar and the great "Wonderful Wino". Not a bad track on the LP. Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up is an obscure treasure on the iconic Straight label. A bit criminal that Jeff Simmons did not get the recognition he deserved. Not unlike many of the great artists. Seek this album out.

Really interesting songwriting on this album. Too unusual to be popular, I guess. Pity.
Are we still friends? I mean, is this your time or mine, or just a sudden-death play-off?

And it’s “...cat ‘o’ nine tails” not
“...cat AND nine tails”! It’s short for “cat of nine tails”...which was a type of multi strand whip.

This is the best track on the album. And Craig Tarwater's guitar playing is great ! He was also top on Arthur Lee's "Vindicator".

cause the only people who care are Zappa followers; Jeff Simmons was the one who walked out on 200 Motels but was back on Roxy & Else. This is an important piece of the puzzle as Conceptual Continuity in Zappa's Universe
