With genres ranging from Funk/Soul to Hip Hop, Electronic, and even Leftfield (whatever the heck that means), Blake stitches together sounds as if he raided every corner of his musical brain attic. And honestly? It works. The record came out everywhere—Asia, UK, Japan, South East Asia, Europe, US, Canada, Australia, Poland—you name it. Labels like Atlas Recordings, Polydor, and Republic Records got behind it, which tells you something about how much buzz this thing had brewing. But let’s get real here: what makes Overgrown stick isn’t its global release or fancy credits; it’s the way it feels like James Blake is whispering secrets directly into your ear. Let’s talk tracks. First up, there’s “Retrograde.” Oh man, this song hits different. The beat builds slow, almost hesitant, like it’s testing the waters before diving in. I think this is James Blake's finest in his repertoire I believe. You've really got to hear the strange beats and coagulations of James Blake's sounds on this pop album. I suppose it as quite a bit melancholy for most people you see, but I like it! Back in 2014 he released a strange LP "200 Press" which called over the summer, during on of his BBC Radio 1 residency shows, James Blake played a new song called "200 Press". When asked about the song's title, he said it was "cause only 200 are going to be pressed up" via his 1-800-Dinosaur label. It features a dark industrial beat and some rapping, all built around a vocal sample that goes, "Gather round the beat like a campfire." The single also contains two new tracks-one of which was described as a "techno-y tune"-and a poem written by Blake called "Words That We Both Know". The poem was previously included in Blake's Essential Mix. SO my take on this poetry is check it out yourself, as it will open your mind and expand your thinking.
