Review by Chelsea Tooley

Met Goud Doorweven: A Schlager-Pop Gem That’s Got More Layers Than Your Grandma’s Quilt Let’s cut to the chase—Jantje Koopmans’ Met Goud Doorweven is like that one quirky uncle who shows up at family gatherings with a ukulele and steals the show. Released in 1995 under Blackbird Music, this Dutch pop-schlager album doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not. It’s unapologetically sentimental, slightly cheesy, and absolutely brimming with heart. If you’re into accordion-driven melodies (and let’s face it, who isn’t?), then buckle up, because this record has got more squeezebox action than a polka festival. Now, I’ll admit, when I first popped this CD into my player—I mean, yeah, I still use CDs—I wasn’t expecting much. But two tracks stuck out like sore thumbs… or maybe happy thumbs? Let me explain. First off, there’s “Mens Durf Te Leven (Pluk Elke Dag).” This track hits you right in the feels faster than an overdue utility bill. The lyrics are all about living life to the fullest, grabbing every moment by its scruff, and squeezing the juice out of it. Jantje delivers the message with such earnestness that even your cynical inner voice starts whispering, “Hey, maybe he’s onto something.” Plus, the melody is so catchy it’ll have you humming along while brushing your teeth. You know a song’s good when you’re belting it out between mouthfuls of toothpaste foam. Then there’s “Gran Canaria,” which is basically a love letter to sunshine, sandy beaches, and all things holiday-related. Listening to this tune feels like sipping piña coladas on a sun lounger, except without the awkward tan lines or overpriced cocktails. Jantje’s vocals here are smooth as butter on warm toast, and the accordion gives it that extra oomph. Honestly, if this track doesn’t make you want to book a flight to somewhere sunny, nothing will. Of course, no review would be complete without mentioning the title track, “Met Goud Doorweven.” True to its name, it weaves together nostalgia, hope, and a dash of melancholy in a way that’s oddly comforting. It’s like wrapping yourself in a blanket made from memories—scratchy in some places but oh-so-cozy overall. What makes this album stand out isn’t just the music; it’s the sheer authenticity. Jantje doesn’t try too hard to impress anyone—he just lets his passion for storytelling shine through. And honestly, that’s refreshing in a world where most artists seem obsessed with chasing trends instead of staying true to themselves. In conclusion, Met Goud Doorweven is the kind of album you listen to when you need a reminder that life’s messy, beautiful, and worth every second. Oh, and fun fact: listening to this record might just inspire you to take up the accordion. Or at least appreciate those who do. Who knew a little Dutch schlager could pack such a punch?
