John Conlee - Greatest Hits Volume 2

Review by Daniel Thomas

John Conlee’s Greatest Hits Volume 2: A Country Gem That Still Shines If you’re a fan of country music with heart and soul, John Conlee’s Greatest Hits Volume 2 is one of those albums that feels like an old friend. Released way back in 1969 (yeah, the same year humans landed on the moon), this record has stood the test of time. It blends styles like Country-Pop, Contemporary Country, and even some Neo-Traditionalist vibes into something uniquely comforting. And let’s not forget—it was mastered by Denny Purcell and produced by Bud Logan, two names who clearly knew what they were doing. Now, flipping through the tracklist feels like taking a road trip down memory lane. There’s so much good stuff here: “Busted,” “Rose Colored Glasses,” “Friday Night Blues”—I mean, come on, it’s hard to pick favorites. But if I had to choose just a couple tracks that stuck with me, I’d go with “Backside Of Thirty” and “As Long As I’m Rockin’ With You.” “Backside Of Thirty” hits different, y’know? It’s got this bittersweet tone about growing older but still holding onto your dreams. The lyrics are simple yet powerful, the kind that make you nod along while thinking, “Man, he gets it.” And then there’s “As Long As I’m Rockin’ With You”—a total earworm. This one’s pure fun, packed with energy and charm. You can almost picture John tipping his hat as he sings it. It’s impossible not to tap your foot or hum along after hearing it once. What makes this album special isn’t just its catchy tunes; it’s how it captures life’s ups and downs without overcomplicating things. Whether you’re dealing with love, work, or just trying to find your place, these songs feel like they’re written for you. Plus, hearing them now reminds me how timeless real storytelling can be. Oh, quick shoutout to MCA Records for keeping this thing alive across the US and Canada. They must’ve known they were onto something big. Funny enough, listening to this album today feels kinda rebellious—like rediscovering something everyone forgot about but shouldn’t have. So yeah, whether you’re new to John Conlee or revisiting an old favorite, Greatest Hits Volume 2 deserves a spot in your playlist. Honestly, it makes me wanna grab my guitar, sit on the porch, and pretend I’m living in simpler times—even though my phone keeps buzzing with emails. Guess that’s the magic of great music, huh?

I am a former truck driver. After a day's work I used to be tired, but I would still go and dance, because I love to and I love music.
Once at Mrs. B's in CA, at the truck stop, I went in to listen to the band, live music. I got a drink, pepsi, and sat down. They played the next song, a toe tapper. I'm not much for just tapping a toe. I get up to dance. I did even though I was tired. It loosens up the muscles, and stretches out the kinks of sitting for hours pounding the pavement- avoiding four wheelers, and all other that goes with the job of keeping those big rigs on the road. I loved it.

This song takes me back to when I was hanging out at this little bar. Lived in a small town and I was the hottest little girl around. Would show up with no money in my pocket but I had all the guys buying my drinks and leave alone when I had enough.these songs take me back, John Conlee, Eddie Rabbit, George Jones..country is gone.. wheres Haggard? Sad...the bar is gone now and the music is silent.

To me, this is the John Conlee-ist John Conlee song.

I guess what I'm trying to say using that as shorthand is that, among his recognizable songs, this is the one that only he could do, as if God created it for him and him specifically. Anyone else that would try would fail beyond description.
