Tambours Battants by Josiane Rey: A Swiss Time Capsule That Packs a Punch Let’s cut to the chase. Tambours Battants isn’t just another dusty relic from 1969—it’s a raw, unfiltered blast of Swiss pop-rock energy that still smacks you in the face if you’re paying attention. Josiane Rey, backed by Alain Morisod et Son Orchestra, delivers an album that feels like it was brewed in some underground Geneva club and then slapped onto vinyl with zero apologies. It’s messy, bold, and kinda genius. The opening track, "Le Petit Porte-Bonheur," hits you like a sugar rush at first listen. The melody bounces around like a hyperactive kid on a trampoline, but don’t let its cheeriness fool you—there’s something dark lurking beneath the surface. Maybe it’s the way Rey sings about luck as if she's daring fate to screw her over. Or maybe it’s how the orchestra swells behind her, all dramatic and brooding, like they know something we don’t. Either way, this song sticks to your brain like gum under a table. Then there’s "Tambours Battants" (duh), which is basically the heart of the whole damn record. This one’s got swagger for days. The drums crash in like thunderclouds rolling over the Alps, and Rey’s voice cuts through the chaos like a knife. You can practically hear her gritting her teeth while singing. There’s no holding back here—it’s pure adrenaline wrapped up in chanson-style poetry. If you don’t feel your pulse quicken during this track, check your pulse because you might be dead. What makes Tambours Battants stand out isn’t just its hooks or production quirks—it’s the attitude. Everything about this album screams “we don’t care what you think.” From Frido’s moody black-and-white photos to the slightly off-kilter mix courtesy of whoever FS is, it’s clear these folks weren’t trying to play it safe. And honestly? That’s why it works. But here’s the kicker: despite being nearly 55 years old, Tambours Battants doesn’t feel ancient. Sure, it has its quirks—like when Thierry Fervant throws in those jangly guitar riffs that sound straight outta a spaghetti western—but the emotions are timeless. Love, defiance, longing—they’re all here, served up without any fancy packaging. So next time someone tells you music from the ‘60s is boring or outdated, shove this album in their face. Hell, crank up "Le Petit Porte-Bonheur" loud enough, and watch them try not to tap their feet. Tambours Battants may have been born in Switzerland, but its heartbeat belongs to anyone who’s ever dared to take a risk. Funny how art does that sometimes.

About Josiane Rey

Josiane Rey was a Swiss (French speaking) singer from Montana-Crans, Valais, Switzerland. She started her career almost by chance, when Arlette Zola met her in the audience during one of her concerts in Valais, and after hearing how well she sang from the audience, she asked her to join the band as a backing vocal. Josiane met the orquestra under the musical direction of the composer Alain Morisod, and just months after that, she signs contract with Disques L'Arpège. She released a total of 7 45rpm singles (3 EP) during 1969 to 1971. In 1972 she travels to England but returns to Valais years after without making the contacts she needed to launch her career from London. Josiane suddenly disappears in september 1978 , leaving her car on the side of the Rhône river. Nine months after her mysterious disappearance, her body, 29-year-old at that time, was found the 1 of june of 1979 in the waters of the Rhône near the Leman.

Josiane Rey was actually from Crans, in the Valais region of Switzerland. She disappeared in the 70s and was feared to have been abducted. I don't think she was ever found.
