Album Review: Don’t Fuckin’ Mess With Texas by Prophecy Released in 2012, Don’t Fuckin’ Mess With Texas is a relentless death metal powerhouse from the US-based band Prophecy. Backed by their own label, Prophecy Records, this album doesn’t mess around—literally. It’s raw, gritty, and unapologetically loud, staying true to the roots of rock and death metal while carving out its own identity. The album kicks off with "Core Of Depression," a track that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. The opening riff hits like a punch to the gut, courtesy of James Parks II on rhythm guitar, while Phil Holland’s vocals tear through the mix like an angry storm. What makes this song stick? It’s not just the brutality—it’s the way it balances chaos with precision. You can tell Daniel Schmuck (who wore more hats on this project than a haberdasher) knew exactly what he was doing behind the mixing desk. Every snare hit from drummer Hank Thompson feels like it could crack concrete, and the basslines rumble beneath it all like distant thunder. Another standout track is “Don’t Fuckin’ Mess With Texas,” which serves as both title anthem and mic-drop moment for the record. This one’s got swagger—death metal meets Southern attitude, complete with guest vocalists Jamie Moore, Jeremy Kitchens ("Kactus"), Mike Majewski, and Wes Wylie adding layers of aggression. There’s something oddly cathartic about screaming along to lyrics that are equal parts brash and empowering. If you’ve ever felt like flipping off authority or life itself, this track gives you permission. Props also go to the artwork by Jeremy Kitchens (“Kactus”), which perfectly captures the vibe: grimy, bold, and dripping with personality. And Michael Huebner’s layout ties everything together visually, making sure the package matches the sonic assault within. What sticks with me most about this album isn’t just the technical skill—it’s how human it feels. Sure, there are moments where things get a little messy, but that adds character. It’s not trying to be perfect; it’s trying to be real. Listening to Don’t Fuckin’ Mess With Texas, you feel like you’re part of something visceral, almost primal. In a world full of polished albums that sound like they were made by robots, Prophecy reminds us why we fell in love with heavy music in the first place. Oh, and if anyone asks why I’m suddenly yelling at my speakers? Blame Phil Holland. Dude’s got pipes. Final thought: Who knew Texas needed defending from anything other than bad barbecue? Turns out, these guys did—and they brought the riffs to prove it.
