Rita Anderson Jackie & Doreen - A Deh Pon Dem Welcome You Back Home

A Deh Pon Dem Welcome You Back Home: A Reggae Gem That Feels Like a Warm Hug from Jamaica Alright, let’s get into this one. A Deh Pon Dem Welcome You Back Home by Rita Anderson Jackie & Doreen is the kind of album that sneaks up on you like an old friend you haven’t seen in years. Released in 2012 under Wincox Records and produced by none other than Clement "Coxsone" Dodd (yeah, THAT Coxsone), it’s got all the vibes—Rocksteady smoothness, Ska bounce, and that raw Jamaican soul we live for. First off, let me just say—it’s not every day you hear something so unapologetically rootsy but still fresh enough to slap in 2023. The whole thing feels like stepping into a dancehall where time doesn’t matter. But two tracks really stuck with me: “Welcome You Back Home” and “A Deh Pon Dem.” Let me break ‘em down for ya. “Welcome You Back Home” hits different. It’s warm, kinda nostalgic, like hearing your grandma call your name when you walk through the door after being gone too long. The harmonies are tight, almost churchy, but there’s this playful bassline underneath keepin’ things lively. Rita, Jackie, and Doreen? They sound like they’re singing TO you, not AT you, if that makes sense. There’s no pretense here—just pure heart. By the second chorus, I was humming along like I’d known the song my whole life. Then there’s “A Deh Pon Dem,” which flips the vibe entirely. This joint has more edge, more grit. It’s got that classic Rocksteady groove—you know, the one that makes your shoulders move before you even realize what’s happening. The lyrics hit hard; it’s about standing firm, claiming space, and letting folks know you ain’t backing down. The horns punch through at just the right moments, giving it this celebratory yet defiant energy. Honestly, I caught myself replaying this track three times in a row because it felt like a pep talk I didn’t know I needed. What strikes me most about this album is how timeless it feels. Even though it dropped over a decade ago, it could’ve been recorded yesterday—or fifty years ago. That’s the magic of reggae done right: it transcends trends and speaks straight to the soul. Plus, having Coxsone behind the boards? You KNOW he brought that authentic Studio One flavor that’ll never go outta style. But here’s the kicker—the unexpected part. Listening to this album made me think about how music can be both personal and universal at the same time. These songs aren’t flashy or trying to reinvent the wheel. Instead, they remind us why we fell in love with reggae in the first place: its honesty, its rhythm, its ability to make you feel like you belong—even if you’re miles away from Jamaica. Oh, and random thought? If aliens ever land on Earth looking for proof of humanity’s creativity, we should hand them this album. Something tells me they’d dig it. So yeah, A Deh Pon Dem Welcome You Back Home isn’t perfect—and maybe that’s why it’s perfect. If you’re a fan of reggae, Rocksteady, or just good music period, do yourself a favor and give it a spin. Trust me, your ears will thank you later.

I am 66 years old right now. When I first heard ska music from my Jamaican neighbors in the mid 1960s,I was hooked. Then Rock steady. Then Jamaican Dub.Then reggae. Then dancehall.American rappers did not invent the dub.It was the Jamaican masters.Don't get me started on Jamaican food. What that island has given to the world is immeasurable. The Bob Marley's of the world 10x over.By rights Jamaica should be the richest island in the Caribbean. But hasn't the African Diaspora always given its humanity and artistry to the world?
