The Silvertones - Foolish Mind

Review by J.M. George

Foolish Mind by The Silvertones: Reggae Gold You Didn’t Know You Needed Alright, let’s get one thing straight—1993 was a wild year. Jurassic Park had us all scared of fake dinosaurs, and Bill Clinton was just settling into the White House with his saxophone vibes. But over in Jamaica, something far cooler (and less CGI-heavy) was brewing: Foolish Mind by The Silvertones. Released under Studio One—the legendary label that basically invented reggae cool—this album is like a warm beach breeze wrapped in soulful grooves. Produced by the wizard himself, C. Dodd, it’s got that timeless Studio One magic dripping from every track. Now, before we dive in, I gotta say this isn’t your typical “polished to death” studio album. It’s raw, gritty, and feels like it was recorded in someone’s living room—if said living room happened to have some of the best musicians on the planet hanging out. And honestly? That’s what makes it so damn good. Standout Tracks That’ll Stick With You First up, there’s “Foolish Mind Pt. 2.” Yeah, they slapped a "Pt. 2" on it because apparently part one wasn’t enough genius for them. This tune grabs you by the ears and doesn’t let go. The bassline is so smooth it could teach Barry White a thing or two about romance. Then there’s the vocals—oh man, those harmonies are tighter than your jeans after Christmas dinner. What sticks with me most is how effortlessly catchy it is. You’ll find yourself humming it while brushing your teeth or pretending you’re cool at parties. Spoiler alert: you won’t be any cooler, but hey, at least you’ll sound dope. Then there’s the OG version, plain ol’ “Foolish Mind.” If Pt. 2 is the flashy younger sibling, this one’s the wise elder who knows life’s secrets. It’s slower, moodier, and has lyrics that hit harder than a jerk chicken sandwich on an empty stomach. There’s something about the way the horns swell in the background—it’s like they’re whispering, “Yeah, we see you, fool.” Ouch. Respectfully done, though. Why This Album Still Matters Here’s the kicker: Foolish Mind came out nearly three decades ago, but it still slaps harder than half the stuff getting churned out today. Maybe it’s the authenticity. Or maybe it’s just that Studio One knew how to press records better back then. Either way, this album reminds you why reggae will never die—it’s music for the soul, not just the Spotify algorithm. And here’s my random thought to leave you with: If aliens ever visit Earth and ask us to explain humanity through music, I’d hand them this album. Not only would they learn about love, heartbreak, and bad decisions, but they might also start growing dreadlocks and opening juice bars. Now THAT’S influence.
