Slim & The Supreme Angels - Serious Business

Review by Sandra Aardema

Serious Business by Slim & The Supreme Angels: A Funk-Soul Gospel Punch to the Gut Alright, let’s get real here. Serious Business isn’t just some run-of-the-mill gospel album from 1990—it’s a raw, unfiltered slap in the face of modern soul music. Released on Melendo Records, this U.S.-bred masterpiece blends funk grooves with holy fire, making it impossible not to move your feet while you’re trying to save your soul. And yeah, I said “holy fire.” Deal with it. First off, if you don’t feel something deep in your chest when "God Loves The Ones (Who Cannot Help Themselves)" kicks in, then buddy, you might need an exorcism. This track hits hard—like, “knock-your-shoes-off” hard. The bassline is so funky it could make James Brown jealous, but the lyrics? Oh man, they cut straight through the noise. It’s about grace for the broken, love for the lost, and honestly? That message feels as fresh today as it did back then. You can’t fake that kind of truth. Then there’s “Try Jesus.” Don’t even get me started on this one. It’s like a call-to-action wrapped up in a velvet-smooth groove. The vocals are dripping with passion, and the horns? Forget it—they’re practically screaming at you to believe. Every time I hear this jam, I wanna grab someone by the shoulders and shake ‘em till they understand what Slim & The Supreme Angels are laying down. Not saying that's legal advice, though. Now, don’t expect perfection here. Some tracks lean a little too far into Sunday morning sermon territory, and sure, the production ain’t exactly cutting-edge by today’s standards. But who cares? This album doesn’t try to be perfect—it tries to be real. Tracks like “He Took My Burdens Away” and “If You Trust A Snake” remind you life’s messy, complicated, and full of snakes (literal AND metaphorical). Ain’t that the truth? Here’s the kicker: listening to Serious Business, you realize how rare it is to find music that actually means something anymore. Most stuff these days feels like it was made by robots aiming for Spotify playlists. But this? This is human. Flawed, fiery, and unforgettable. So next time you're feeling all cynical about the state of music—or life in general—throw on Serious Business. Let Slim & The Supreme Angels knock you sideways. Just don’t blame me if you start praising Jesus in the middle of your living room.
