Album Review: I Wanna See You Soon by Tavares with Freda Payne (1977) Alright, buckle up because we’re diving into a groovy little slice of disco heaven that’s been hiding in plain sight since 1977. I Wanna See You Soon, the joint effort from Tavares and Freda Payne, is like your cool aunt showing up to Thanksgiving in bell-bottoms and platform heels—unexpected but totally welcome. Released on Capitol Records, this funk/soul gem struts its stuff across two countries (the UK and Netherlands) with enough swagger to make even James Brown nod approvingly. Let’s talk tracks, shall we? First up, “Keep In Touch.” This one hits like a warm hug from someone you haven’t seen in ages. Freddie Perren’s production is slick as butter on a hot biscuit, while Don Peake and Samuel F. Brown III sprinkle some magic arranging dust all over it. The bassline? Oh man, it slinks around like it owns the place, and Freda Payne’s vocals slide in smoother than a fresh jar of peanut butter. It’s hard not to feel like you’re at Studio 54 when this one plays—minus the questionable fashion choices. You remember this track because it sticks to your ribs like grits; it’s got hooks for days and an energy that just won’t quit. Then there’s the title track, “I Wanna See You Soon.” If ever a song could double as a pick-up line, this would be it. Tavares steps up here with their signature harmonies, blending so seamlessly they sound like they’ve been singing together since diapers. The rhythm feels tailor-made for spinning under glitter balls or awkwardly slow-dancing with someone special. Lyrically, it’s simple—you know, yearning for connection—but somehow it works. It’s earnest without being cheesy, which is harder than nailing Jenga after three glasses of wine. Freddie Perren clearly had his A-game on lock here, crafting tunes that are both danceable and emotionally resonant. And can we give a shout-out to Blair's for cutting those lacquers? The sound quality pops off the record like confetti at New Year’s Eve. So why does this album still matter today? Well, aside from being a certified time capsule of late ‘70s disco fever, it reminds us how music can bridge gaps between people and genres. Plus, let’s face it—sometimes you just need something funky to blast while scrubbing burnt lasagna off your oven rack. That’s where I Wanna See You Soon comes in clutch. You know what? Listening to this record makes me think about how life was simpler back then. People weren’t glued to their phones—they were too busy perfecting their spins on the dance floor. Weirdly enough, I kinda miss that…except maybe the polyester suits. Those could stay lost forever.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *I Wanna See You Soon* by Tavares with Freda Payne is a hidden gem from 1977. It blends Funk, Soul, and Disco perfectly. Fun fact—Freddie Perren, the producer, also worked on hits like *Lady Marmalade*. The track *Keep In Touch* has killer arrangements by Don Peake and Samuel F. Brown III. Saw them at the Sugar Shack in Boston must have been 1973/4 with Butch picking fights with people in the audience. The name sounded cool and my daughter has never forgiven me for naming her Tavares.

I grew up listening to Tavares in my youth, and this rare gem as back then gets my heart pumping all the day long.
If not for my sister (at my age of twelve) had not introduced this fine brotherly vocal group my growing years and subsequent introduction into R&B would have surely been sadly lacking in great musical appreciation.
I owned the stereo 8-track recording of Love Storm, this was one of my favorite all album tracks to get back and start again and again.
Now at the age of 54, the ability to search and find rare gems over the internet and stream, listen and enjoy has been a Godsend for us so passionate about the love of music!
Now time to repeat play!!!
