Tiefling, Coko - The Nexus

Review by Matt Muratori

The Nexus by Tiefling & Coko: A Breakbeat Odyssey That Still Hits If you’re into electronic music with a brain and a heartbeat, The Nexus is one of those albums that sneaks up on you like an uninvited guest who turns out to be the life of the party. Released in 2006 via Temporal-Net (a label that clearly knows its stuff), this UK-born gem dives headfirst into breakbeat and progressive trance without ever feeling like it’s trying too hard. And honestly? It doesn’t need to. Let’s talk tracks—because while all four cuts have their moments, two stand out like neon signs in a foggy alleyway. First off, there’s The Nexus (Navarone Mix). This track feels like what happens when your headphones decide to throw a rave inside your skull. The beat builds steadily, layer upon layer, until you're caught in this hypnotic spiral of sound. It's not just music; it’s more like a ride through some futuristic cityscape where everything pulses with energy. You know how sometimes you hear something and it sticks to your ribs? Yeah, that’s this mix. I remember listening to it late at night, windows down, driving nowhere in particular, and thinking, “Damn, this is what freedom sounds like.” Then there’s The Nexus (Tiefling’s Trapped Mix)—and oh boy, does this one live up to its name. It starts off smooth enough, lulling you into a false sense of chill before BAM! The bass drops, and suddenly you’re trapped—but in the best possible way. There’s this tension running through the whole thing, like it’s daring you to keep moving forward even though you don’t know where you’re going. By the time the synths kick back in, it’s less of a song and more of an experience. Every time I hear it, I find myself zoning out, staring at nothing, completely lost in the vibe. Like, who needs coffee when you’ve got this? Sure, The Nexus might only have four tracks, but each one packs a punch like a well-timed joke—you don’t see it coming, but once it lands, you can’t stop grinning. What’s wild is how fresh it still feels almost two decades later. Maybe it’s the production, maybe it’s the creativity, or maybe it’s just magic. Whatever it is, it works. So here’s the kicker: as much as I love the album, part of me wonders if Tiefling and Coko knew they were crafting something timeless—or if they were just messing around in a studio somewhere, fueled by caffeine and pure instinct. Either way, we got lucky. Now go listen to it. Your ears will thank you… eventually.
