Birds Of Tin - Motion Mimic

Review by Nick Dorak

Motion Mimic by Birds Of Tin: A Sonic Puzzle You Can’t Unhear Let’s get this straight—Motion Mimic isn’t your typical electronic album. Released in 2003 by the Canadian duo Birds Of Tin under the label XZF, it’s a wild ride through ambient soundscapes, abstract beats, and experimental vibes that feel like they were stitched together from some alternate dimension. This ain’t background music for sipping coffee—it demands attention. The tracklist reads like poetry, but two songs stuck with me like gum on a shoe: “Eaten By Teeth Of Flame” and “Motion Mimic.” “Eaten By Teeth Of Flame”—damn, even the title gives me chills. It starts off slow, almost hesitant, as if it’s unsure whether to exist at all. Then BAM! These glitchy bursts of noise hit you outta nowhere, like sparks flying off metal grinding against metal. There’s something raw about it, like it’s capturing chaos itself but somehow making it beautiful. Listening feels like walking through an abandoned factory late at night—you know you shouldn’t be there, but holy hell, it’s mesmerizing. Then there’s the title track, “Motion Mimic.” It’s sneaky. At first, it lulls you into thinking it’s just another moody piece of ambient driftwood floating downstream. But wait… is that a heartbeat? Or maybe footsteps? The layers build so subtly you don’t notice until you’re fully submerged. By the end, I swear my chest felt heavier, like it had synced up with the rhythm without asking permission. It’s haunting, but not in a ghost-story way—in a way that makes you question how much control you really have over your own body. Other tracks like “Thaw” and “Plucked Kinetic” keep the vibe going strong, blending icy textures with moments of unexpected warmth. And hey, props to them for naming a song “Kin Dust,” which sounds like something sci-fi cowboys would whisper around a campfire on Mars. But here’s the thing—this album doesn’t wrap itself up neatly. It leaves threads hanging, questions unanswered. That’s what makes it stick. Like life, Motion Mimic refuses to explain itself. Instead, it invites you to sit in its weirdness, embrace its imperfections, and find meaning where none might actually exist. Fun fact? After listening to this record five times in one day, I started hearing glitches in everyday sounds—the hum of my fridge, car engines idling, even birds chirping outside. Maybe that’s the point. Maybe Birds Of Tin are messing with us, turning our ears inside out to see what spills out. So yeah, give this one a spin if you’re tired of predictable beats and polished production. Just don’t blame me if your toaster starts sounding suspiciously musical afterward.

About Birds Of Tin

Birds of Tin is a long running experimental/ambient/sound art project based in the U.S. Over the course of more than 10 years of releases, Birds of Tin has released a series of albums that present a cohesive and recognizable environment out of pure sound. Influences are varied and the overall effect is like listening to a Joan Miro' or Jackson Pollock painting. A recent review described his work as "an intense ride full of twists and turns that keeps you listening through sheer force of execution. Its fairly open beginning filled with hushed tonalities and half sung half chanted vocalizations is gradually replaced by a phantasmagoria of cascading loops and contrasting textures of phosphorous noise that slowly increase in intensity through to the track's climax."
