Album Review: Palomino by Trampled By Turtles – A Folk Odyssey That’ll Knock Your Socks Off Let’s cut to the chase: if you’re into string-heavy tunes that feel like they were born in a barn but raised in a hipster coffee shop, then Palomino (2011) is your jam. This Minnesota-based band, Trampled By Turtles, has crafted an album so rich with twangy goodness and heart-on-sleeve storytelling that it might just make you want to grab a banjo—or at least Google how to play one. Now, let me drop some context before we dive deeper. The genres here are all over the map—folk, bluegrass, country rock, alternative indie rock—and yet somehow it doesn’t feel scattered. Nope. It feels cohesive, like someone took every flavor of Americana and blended them into a perfect smoothie. And oh boy, does it go down easy. Standout Tracks That’ll Stick With Ya First up, “Wait So Long.” Man, this track hits different. Dave Simonett’s vocals have this raw, gravelly charm, like he’s singing from the bottom of a whiskey glass after a long day. The mandolin work by Erik Berry? Absolutely killer. It’s got this driving rhythm that makes you wanna stomp your feet or maybe even attempt a clumsy jig in your living room. What sticks out most, though, is the lyricism—it’s simple yet profound, kinda like when you accidentally say something deep while drunk. You know what I mean? Then there’s “New Son/Burnt Iron,” which sounds like a dusty Western soundtrack for a movie that doesn’t exist—but should. Ryan Young’s fiddle playing steals the show here; it whines and wails as if it’s telling its own tragic story. There’s a haunting quality to the whole thing, like staring at an old photograph you can’t quite place. It’s melancholy without being maudlin, and dang if that isn’t a hard balance to strike. Why This Album Feels Like Home What really sets Palomino apart is how effortlessly it bridges the gap between old-timey traditions and modern sensibilities. Sure, the instrumentation screams roots music—banjos, mandolins, upright bass—but the production gives it polish without losing authenticity. Kudos to Chad Weis, Erik Koskinen, and the rest of the engineering crew for keeping things crisp without overdoing it. And props to Dave Carroll, who not only shreds on the banjo but also co-wrote a couple tracks. Dude clearly knows his way around both strings and words. Meanwhile, Dave Simonett proves himself as the mastermind behind much of the magic, wearing multiple hats as producer, guitarist, designer, and chief songwriter. If multitasking were an Olympic sport, dude would take home gold. Final Thoughts… Or Maybe Not? So yeah, Palomino is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. One listen, and you think, “Cool, nice folk vibes.” Five listens later, and suddenly you’re quoting lyrics to strangers and debating whether “Victory” or “Bloodshot Eyes” deserves more airtime. But here’s the kicker: listening to this record feels less like consuming music and more like hanging out with old friends. Friends who happen to be ridiculously talented musicians. Friends who remind you why life—even with all its chaos—is worth sticking around for. Oh, and fun fact: I once tried to learn “Wait So Long” on guitar. Let’s just say my cat hasn’t forgiven me yet. Rating: 4.5/5 Because perfection is boring, and besides, no album should hog ALL the stars.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Palomino* by Trampled By Turtles blends so many styles, it feels like a musical journey. Folk, bluegrass, and even hints of indie rock all come together. What’s wild is that the band arranged everything themselves, giving it a raw, personal touch. Dave Simonett, the guitarist and producer, wrote most of the tracks, but each member brought their own flavor—like Ryan Young’s fiddle adding sparks of energy. It’s no wonder the album resonated across the U.S. and Canada when it came out in 2011. Oh, and fun tidbit: there are two versions of "Feet and Bones" listed, which makes you wonder if they just loved it too much to pick one!

The Duluth quintet have fashioned one of the best bluegrass albums of recent times, thereby bringing this genre of music a new generation of listeners. It appears that since their debut six years earlier, the band have honed their ability to fuse bluegrass with their maverick and punk roots. This is no more parent than on the frenzied and freewheeling album opener, 'Wait So Long', and the aptly titled 'It's a War'. This album also demonstrates Dave Simonett et al can also excel at balladry with another standout track being "Bloodshot Eyes', while the piercing fatalism behind album closer 'Again' details the shared realisation of a relationship's natural end. The real standout track for this reviewer is the stylish arrangement of 'Separate' which highlights above all the more contemporary feel the band have provided to challenge bluegrass purists.
