Hells Bent On Rockin’ – A Wild Ride Through Psychobilly Chaos Alright, let’s talk about Hells Bent On Rockin’, the 1989 album from Various that’s kinda like a chaotic jukebox of rock’n’roll rebellion. Released on Nervous Records in the UK, this thing is dripping with raw energy and some seriously wild vibes. It’s part Rock, part Pop/Rock, and full-on Alternative madness, but where it really shines is in its Psychobilly and Rockabilly roots. If you’re into music that feels like it was made for smoky dive bars and late-night drives, this one's got your name all over it. First off, gotta shout out to Russell Walker and Mark Rogerson for bringing their A-game on the design front. The sleeve art? Killer. Feels like something you’d find scribbled on the back of a biker jacket or tattooed onto someone who’s been living life way too hard. And Robin Scott’s liner notes? They give just enough context without spoiling the fun—anecdotes that make you feel like you’re peeking behind the curtain at a secret underground scene. Now, onto the tracks. There are a lot (seriously, they repeat a few titles because apparently redundancy is punk), but two songs stuck with me right away: “What You Gonna Do Tonite?” and “Rockabilly Stroll.” “What You Gonna Do Tonite?” kicks things off with this swaggering beat that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. Lyrically, it’s not exactly Shakespeare—but honestly, who cares? This isn’t about being profound; it’s about having a damn good time. The guitar riffs hit like adrenaline shots, and there’s this sneering vocal delivery that makes you wanna grab a mic and scream along even if you sound terrible. It’s got this groovy bassline that worms its way into your brain, plus some twangy guitars that feel straight outta the ’50s but with an edge. Like imagine Elvis Presley after a few too many cups of coffee and a run-in with Sid Vicious. You can practically picture leather jackets, slicked-back hair, and jittery dance moves when this track comes on. Other highlights include “Ghost Train” (spooky vibes, big yes) and “Scratch Chicken Scratch” (because how could you not love a song with a title like that?). But yeah, overall, the album has this scrappy charm that keeps pulling you back in. Sure, some tracks blend together, and yeah, maybe repeating song titles was a questionable choice—but hey, sometimes chaos is the point. So here’s the weird thing: listening to Hells Bent On Rockin’ feels like flipping through an old photo album filled with people you’ve never met but somehow recognize anyway. This is the version I made with The Sharks in late 1982 . I then recorded it again with Frenzy in early 1984 . The other version appeared on the Frenzy Hall of Mirrors album . I sing both versions . I wrote the song . Cheers .....Steve Whitehouse
