Alright, buckle up. Witold Małcużyński Plays Piano Works By Liszt is one of those albums that punches you in the gut—except it’s wearing velvet gloves. This Polish powerhouse doesn’t just play Liszt; he wrestles with the guy’s soul like they’re old rivals settling scores at a bar. Released under Polskie Nagrania Muza, this record screams classical but feels more like an emotional brawl between man and music. Let’s cut to the chase: two tracks hit hard enough to leave bruises. First off, there’s “Années De Pèlerinage” – Première Année, VI, Vallée D’Obermann. Holy crap, does Malcużyński make this piece his own. It starts slow, almost teasing you, like, "Yeah, I got all day." But then BAM—it builds into this avalanche of sound where every note feels like it’s clawing its way outta hell. You can practically hear Obermann losing his mind over existential dread while Malcużyński smashes the keys like he's trying to wake up God Himself. Then there’s Sonata H-moll, which hits different. If Vallée D’Obermann was a storm, this one’s a knife fight in the dark. The tension here is unreal—Malcużyński doesn’t let you breathe. He drags you through these twisting passages, hammering home Liszt’s genius without ever sounding polite about it. There’s no sugarcoating or fancy frills—he just goes for the jugular. When that final chord slams down, you're left sitting there thinking, “Did someone just punch me in the chest?” Now, look, I ain’t saying this album’s perfect. Sometimes it gets so intense you wanna scream, “Dude, chill!” But maybe that’s the point. Malcużyński doesn’t care if you’re comfortable—he wants you to feel everything. And honestly? That kinda raw passion is rare these days. Most pianists tiptoe around Liszt like he’s some fragile relic. Not this guy. He grabs Liszt by the collar and says, “Let’s go.” Here’s the kicker though: listening to this album makes me wonder what the heck we’re doing wrong now. Back in Poland during whatever era this was recorded, they didn’t have Spotify playlists or TikTok trends telling them how to play. They just showed up, poured their guts into the piano, and hoped someone would listen. Maybe that’s why Witold Małcużyński still matters today—he wasn’t playing for likes or shares. He was playing because he had no choice. And damn, are we lucky he did.
