Album Review: Μώλυ by Σείριος Σαββαΐδης – A Psychedelic Journey Rooted in Greek Soul
Let’s cut to the chase: Μώλυ is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released back in 2017, it’s a wild mix of rock, folk, and world vibes with a heavy dose of psychedelic rock thrown in for good measure. If you’re into music that feels like a road trip through the Greek countryside but also kinda like tripping out under the stars, this is your jam.
Σείριος Σαββαΐδης (try saying that five times fast) is the mastermind behind this beast. He wrote the songs, played most of the instruments, co-produced the whole thing, and even handled some of the recording duties alongside Τάσος Καραπαπάζογλου—a name I’m sure no one will forget anytime soon. The art direction? Shoutout to Στράτος Πατλαμάζογλου, who gave the album its dreamy, otherworldly vibe.
Now, let’s talk tracks. There are six total, but two stood out to me so much they’ve been stuck in my head ever since I hit play.
First up, “Κλέφτικο” (Kleftiko). This track hits hard right from the start. It’s got this raw energy that pulls you in—it’s almost like you can hear the dust kicking up as the riff kicks off. The lyrics feel ancient yet modern at the same time, like a story passed down through generations but told in a way only Σείριος could pull off. By the time the chorus rolls around, you realize you’ve already nodded along three times without meaning to. No idea what he’s singing about half the time, but man, does it sound epic.
Then there’s “Η Ιστορία Της Χελώνας” (The Story of the Turtle). What’s not to love about a song inspired by turtles? Okay, maybe it’s deeper than just turtles—I don’t know, I should probably brush up on my Greek mythology—but damn if this doesn’t feel like floating downstream on a lazy river while someone whispers secrets into your ear. The guitar work here is hypnotic, weaving in and out like waves lapping at the shore. You find yourself zoning out, thinking deep thoughts about life or whatever, before snapping back when the drums kick back in.
What really makes Μώλυ stand out isn’t just how well-crafted each track is—it’s how personal it feels. Like, you can tell this wasn’t made to please anyone but himself. Self-released under his own label, then later picked up by Sound Effect Records and Cosmic Eye, it’s clear this album came straight from the heart. And honestly? That’s rare these days.
If I had to sum it all up, I’d say Μώλυ is less of an album and more of an experience. Listening to it feels like stepping into another world—one where time slows down, colors get brighter, and everything smells faintly of sage burning somewhere nearby. Oh, and here’s the kicker: after listening to it, I kinda wanna learn Greek now. Who knew?
So yeah, check it out. Just don’t blame me if you end up losing hours staring at the artwork trying to figure out what it means.
