Review by Elisabeth Daschofsky

Alright, let’s dive into this gem from way back in 1956—Эх Матушка Светит Месяц by Лидия Русланова. This is one of those albums that feels like stepping into a time machine, straight to the USSR, where folk music wasn’t just tunes but stories wrapped in melody. Released under the label Ленинградский Завод, it’s got that raw, unfiltered vibe you don’t hear much anymore. First off, the title track Эх, Матушка, Светит Месяц—man, it sticks with you. It’s not flashy or overproduced; instead, it’s got this earthy charm that grabs your soul. Лидия’s voice? Pure magic. She sings like she’s lived every word, and honestly, it feels more like she’s telling you a story around a campfire than performing on a record. The way the strings and accordion weave in and out gives it this warm, almost hypnotic feel. You can practically picture yourself in some small village, staring up at the moon while life slows down for a sec. That’s the power of folk music—it’s real, no frills attached. Another standout track (though they’re all solid) is Светит Месяц. There’s something haunting yet comforting about it. Maybe it’s how Лидия stretches certain notes or how simple the melody is, but it hits different. I kept rewinding this one because it felt like there was more to uncover each time. It's the kind of song that sneaks up on you when you least expect it, popping into your head hours later while you're doing something random like folding laundry or waiting for the kettle to boil. What makes this album special isn’t just the music—it’s the vibe. Listening to it feels like eavesdropping on history. Back in ’56, things were... complicated, to say the least. But here’s this woman pouring her heart out through traditional folk songs, keeping culture alive during a time when so much was changing. You can tell she wasn’t singing for fame or TikTok clout—this was genuine, heartfelt stuff meant to connect people. Honestly, reviewing an album like this makes me wonder: do we even make music like this anymore? Or are we too busy chasing trends to stop and listen to the world around us? Either way, Эх Матушка Светит Месяц deserves a spot in any collection—not because it’s perfect, but because it’s human. And sometimes, that’s enough. Oh, fun fact: listening to this album made me crave borscht. Go figure.
