Arlo Guthrie - Running Down The Road

Running Down The Road by Arlo Guthrie: A Folk-Rock Gem That Still Kicks If you’ve ever wondered what happens when folk meets rock, tosses in a dash of psychedelia, and takes a road trip across continents, Running Down The Road is your answer. Released in 1975 on Reprise Records (with some later reissues floating around), this album feels like an old friend who shows up unannounced but always brings good stories. It’s raw, real, and kinda messy—in the best way possible. Arlo Guthrie wasn’t just riding his dad Woody Guthrie’s coattails here; he was carving out his own lane with tracks that blend storytelling, groove, and heart. The genres? Folk, rock, even a splash of pop. Styles? Oh man, it's a buffet: folk-rock, contemporary folk, psychedelic garage vibes—it’s all there. And somehow, it works. Let me zoom in on two tracks that stick with me every time I spin this record. First up, “Coming Into Los Angeles.” This one’s a slow burn that sneaks up on ya. You can practically smell the smog and hear the traffic jams as Arlo croons about rolling into LA with dreams bigger than the city itself. There’s something hypnotic about the way the harmonica wails alongside his vocals—it’s not polished perfection, but that’s exactly why it hits so hard. It’s got grit, soul, and enough swagger to make you wanna pack your bags and hit the highway yourself. I mean, who hasn’t felt that mix of excitement and dread pulling into a new place? Arlo nails it without trying too hard. Then there’s “Oh, In The Morning.” Man, this track feels like waking up after a long night, bleary-eyed but smiling anyway. It’s simple, almost conversational, yet packed with warmth. Arlo’s piano work shines here, giving the song a cozy, lived-in feel. It reminds me of lazy Sunday mornings where nothing’s planned, and everything’s okay. The lyrics are clever without being pretentious—just Arlo doing what he does best: telling stories that feel personal but universal. By the second verse, you’re humming along like you’ve known it forever. What makes Running Down The Road stand out isn’t just the music—it’s the people behind it. Imagine Ry Cooder laying down mandolin licks while Clarence White shreds guitar solos. Or Lenny Waronker and Van Dyke Parks co-producing, adding layers of weirdness and wonder. Even the liner notes read like a who’s-who of ‘70s talent. Ed Thrasher’s art direction gives the cover that retro vibe that screams “stick this on your turntable right now.” And let’s not forget the global reach. From the US to Japan, Germany to South Africa, this album bounced around the world like a restless traveler. Labels like Koch Records and Rising Son kept it alive over the years, proving its staying power. So yeah, Running Down The Road might not be perfect. Some songs drag, others feel like they could’ve used another take. But honestly? That’s part of its charm. It’s human. Flawed. Real. As I sit here spinning it again, I realize something kinda funny. For all its talk of running down roads and chasing dreams, the album feels more like sitting still and appreciating where you are. Maybe that’s the secret. Maybe we don’t need to run at all. Or maybe I’m just overthinking it because Pete Seeger wrote one of the tracks. Either way, crank this baby up—you won’t regret it.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that Arlo Guthrie's *Running Down The Road* album, released in 1975, was a global effort? It featured collaborations with musicians across genres and styles, including legendary guitarist Ry Cooder on mandolin and James Burton on guitar. The album blended folk, rock, and even psychedelic influences, showcasing Guthrie's versatility. Interestingly, the record saw releases not just in the US and UK but also in far-flung places like Taiwan and South Africa, proving its worldwide appeal. And get this—Arlo wrote most of the tracks himself, but he also paid homage to his roots by including songs credited to his father, Woody Guthrie, and other folk icons like Pete Seeger and Mississippi John Hurt.

This song had airplay when I was eleven, year after Woodstock. The import of the lyrics was a mystery, until I was much older :-).As before, I still love this song! And Alice's Restaurant! For some reason, I associate this song with Joe Cocker's version of "My Baby, She Wrote Me A Letter". Airplay the same year? Thanks, Arlo (and Joe).

Excuse my ignorance but his Father I believe was Woody. G. And was Dad''s style blue grass? I must at least check him out as it's a total unheard of gonra to myself. What have I missed I ask?
His nasal voice, and unusual phraseology on the "Mr. Customs Man" verses is just wonderful!
