Review by Lindiagane Silveira

Jonas Plays Gullin: A Jazz Journey That Feels Like Home If you’re into jazz that doesn’t try too hard to impress but still leaves a mark, Jonas Plays Gullin by Bertil "Jonas" Jonasson is the kind of album you’ll want to keep on repeat. Released in 2012 under Sweden’s Prophone label, this record feels like a warm hug from an old friend—comforting yet full of surprises. It’s not flashy or overproduced; instead, it’s raw and honest, with every note breathing life into your speakers. Let me tell you about two tracks that stuck with me long after the music stopped playing. First up, “Late Summer.” Man, this one hits different. The piano work by Kjell Öhman is just… chef’s kiss. It’s melancholic without being sad, if that makes sense? You can almost feel the golden light of late August fading away as Hans Backenroth’s basslines rumble softly beneath. There’s something so human about how the instruments interact—it’s like they’re having a conversation you don’t fully understand but somehow get anyway. Then there’s “Bugs,” which honestly feels like chaos held together by pure talent. Jocke Ekberg’s drumming here is wild yet controlled, giving the whole thing a playful edge. And those saxophone solos? Bertil “Jonas” Jonasson switches between baritone and alto like he owns both, weaving these intricate patterns that make you sit up and pay attention. It’s quirky, unpredictable, and utterly captivating. By the time the track ends, you’re left wondering what just happened—but in the best way possible. What stands out most about Jonas Plays Gullin isn’t just its technical brilliance (though yeah, everyone involved clearly knows their stuff). It’s the vibe. This isn’t background music; it demands your presence. Whether it’s Jan Allan adding trumpet magic on select tracks or Krister Palmquist laying down smooth guitar riffs, each musician brings their A-game while keeping things grounded. Even the mastering by Jon Allan deserves a shoutout—it gives the album a richness that pulls you right in. And let’s not forget Gunnar Holmberg’s liner notes, which add a personal touch to the whole experience. Reading them feels like hearing stories from someone who was there when the magic happened. Reflecting on this album, I can’t help but think about how jazz often mirrors life itself—messy, beautiful, imperfect, and deeply emotional. Listening to Jonas Plays Gullin, I felt like I’d stumbled upon a secret world where everything made sense for a little while. Oh, and here’s the unexpected part: halfway through writing this review, my cat jumped onto my desk and knocked over my coffee cup. As I cleaned up the mess, I realized that’s exactly what good jazz does—it disrupts your routine in the best possible way. So thanks, Jonas, for making such a damn fine mess of sounds.
