Review by John Rettie

Album Review: It Doesn't Matter by Buildings Released in 2014 on Riot House Records, It Doesn’t Matter by Buildings is a punchy, chaotic ride through the underbelly of punk and rock. The album leans hard into math rock’s angular rhythms, post-hardcore’s raw emotion, and noise’s abrasive edges. It’s not for everyone—this is music that grabs you by the collar and shakes loose whatever complacency you walked in with. The band, hailing from the US, brings together a tight-knit crew of talent. Brian Lake handles vocals and guitar duties while Joe Clark lays down basslines as jagged as broken glass. Travis Kuhlman’s drumming feels like controlled chaos, keeping everything stitched together even when it threatens to unravel. And let’s give props to Jeff Marcovis (engineer and mixer) and Rob Schlette (mastering), who make sure the sound hits just as hard as the songs themselves. Two tracks stand out immediately: “Gold” and “Because It Doesn’t Matter.” “Gold” kicks off the record with an explosive burst of energy. The riffs zigzag unpredictably, but somehow they never lose their grip. Lake’s vocals are raw and unhinged, cutting through the mix like a rusty blade. What sticks with me most is how the track builds tension—it’s like watching a storm roll in. You know something big is coming, but you’re not sure exactly when or how. By the time the crescendo hits, you’re already hooked. Then there’s “Because It Doesn’t Matter,” which closes the album on a haunting note. This track stretches out longer than the others, giving space for quieter moments to breathe before erupting into feedback-laden fury. The repetition of the title feels like a mantra—or maybe a surrender. Either way, it leaves you sitting in silence, staring at your speakers long after the last note fades. One thing I’ll say about It Doesn’t Matter: it doesn’t try to be cool. There’s no pretense here, no attempt to smooth over the rough edges. That’s what makes it so damn memorable. Buildings aren’t interested in polish; they’re chasing something visceral, something real. And honestly? More bands should take notes. Here’s the kicker: listening to this album feels like getting lost in a maze where every wrong turn leads somewhere better than expected. Sure, it’s messy. But sometimes life is too.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The album *It Doesn’t Matter* by Buildings is a wild mix of punk, rock, and math rock chaos, released in 2014 under Riot House Records. What’s cool is that Joe Clark pulled double duty—laying down basslines and designing the artwork. And get this: the track *Because It Doesn’t Matter* shows up three times on the album, but each version has its own twist, like they couldn’t decide which one was the “final” take. Maybe it really doesn’t matter after all?
