Carolyn Wonderland - Peace Meal

Peace Meal by Carolyn Wonderland: A Soulful Bite of Rock and Blues Alright, let’s talk about Peace Meal, the 2011 gem from Carolyn Wonderland. This album is like a greasy diner burger—messy in all the right ways, packed with flavor, and it sticks with you long after you’ve had your fill. With genres spanning rock and blues, plus styles dipping into alternative/indie and pop/rock, this record feels like a road trip through soundscapes that stretch from Germany to the US. Labels Blue Rose Records and Bismeaux Records gave this baby a home, but it’s Carolyn’s raw energy and killer credits (shoutout to Larry Campbell and Michael Nesmith!) that make it unforgettable. Now, I gotta zoom in on two tracks because, honestly, they’re burned into my brain. First up, there’s “Dust My Broom.” If you know anything about blues, you already know this classic tune—but Carolyn makes it hers. Her voice cracks just enough to feel real, not polished, and her guitar work? Damn near hypnotic. It’s one of those songs where you think, “Yeah, I’ve heard this before,” but then she flips it on its head. The slide guitar solo hits like a shot of whiskey—smooth yet sharp—and suddenly you’re sitting alone in your car at midnight, windows down, feeling every note deep in your chest. Then there’s “St. Marks.” Oh man, this track sneaks up on you. At first, it feels like an old-school hymn, quiet and reflective, but as it builds, it turns into something else entirely. There’s this moment around the halfway mark when everything drops out except for her voice and the piano, and it’s like…whoa. You don’t expect vulnerability like that in a rock-blues hybrid, but here we are. By the time the drums kick back in, you’re hooked. It’s haunting without being over-the-top dramatic—you just wanna sit with it for a while. The production deserves props too. Having Ray Benson and Sam⚡Seifert co-producing alongside legends like Larry Campbell gives this album layers you only notice after multiple listens. And Michael Nesmith throwing his magic into “Shine On”? That’s some next-level cool right there. But here’s the thing—I can’t wrap this review without mentioning how weirdly comforting it is to hear someone tackle life’s chaos so unapologetically. Tracks like “What Good Can Drinkin’ Do” hit different because, let’s face it, most of us have been there. But Carolyn doesn’t wallow; she sings like she’s daring the world to knock her down again. Spoiler alert: It won’t. So yeah, Peace Meal isn’t perfect—it’s messy, loud, and occasionally rough around the edges—but maybe that’s why it works. Life ain’t perfect either, and sometimes you need music that reminds you it’s okay to stumble. Listening to this album feels like finding a crumpled-up love letter in your pocket years later. You didn’t forget it was there, but rediscovering it still takes your breath away. And hey, fun fact: Did you know pigeons were trained during WWII to carry tiny cameras? Totally random, I know, but kinda like this album—unexpectedly badass.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that Carolyn Wonderland's album *Peace Meal* has a cool mix of producers who brought their own magic to the tracks? Larry Campbell, known for his work with Bob Dylan, produced several songs, while Michael Nesmith, of The Monkees fame, helmed one track. It’s like a musical mashup of rock and blues legends behind the scenes! The album even features two versions of "Meet Me in the Morning," adding a little mystery to the mix. Not bad for an album that came out in 2011, huh?

I know that Mike Nesmith produced this, but I was trying to figure out what did he do as far as production. It hit me at the end: the mix is so jumbled and it does sound like he just threw the band in a room and said go for it! Which the final product sounds like the musicians are just having a ball, sweating and bashing it out. I'd be surprised if Papa Nez asked for very many takes. This sounds like 1 take of perfection.
