Album Review: El Clon by Desorden Público – A Ska-Reggae Odyssey from Venezuela If you’ve ever wondered what happens when Venezuelan ska meets reggae vibes and gets remixed six ways to Sunday, El Clon by Desorden Público is your answer. Released in 2001 under Sony Music, this album feels like a time capsule of experimentation tied together by one central theme: the track "El Clon." But don’t let its repetitive title fool you—this isn’t a lazy rehash; it’s a wild ride through different styles that keeps you hooked. The album opens with “El Clon (En Vivo En Berlin 1999)”, which immediately grabs your attention. It’s raw, energetic, and dripping with live performance charisma. You can almost picture the band on stage in Berlin, feeding off the crowd’s energy while horns blare and drums punch through the mix. This version stands out because it captures that unpolished magic only live recordings can deliver. It reminds me of those nights when music isn’t just something you listen to—it’s something you feel. The saxophone solo? Pure fire. I found myself replaying this track multiple times just to soak it all in. Another standout is “El Clon (Funky House Dub).” If you’re into electronic beats layered over reggae roots, this one will slap you awake. The bassline grooves so hard it could make even the stiffest dancer nod their head. What makes this remix memorable is how it balances the original ska essence with funky house elements without losing its soul. It’s not often you hear dub done this way—fresh yet respectful to its origins. Every time the beat drops, it pulls you deeper into its hypnotic rhythm. Honestly, it’s the kind of song that would fit perfectly at both a beach party and a late-night rave. Now, about the rest of the album—it’s essentially a remix fest. From the tribal vibes of “El Clon (Tribal Mix)” to the stripped-down demo version (“Demo 5 Canales 2000”), each take brings something new to the table. Some might argue there’s too much focus on one song, but for fans of genre-blending creativity, it works. Listening to these variations feels like flipping through an artist’s sketchbook, seeing how they explore every angle of an idea. What strikes me most about El Clon is how ahead of its time it feels. Back in 2001, Latin America wasn’t exactly known as a hub for ska-reggae fusion, let alone remix culture. Yet here’s Desorden Público, proving that Venezuela has more musical depth than many give it credit for. They weren’t trying to copy Jamaica or Europe—they carved their own lane, blending local flavor with global sounds. In the end, El Clon isn’t just an album; it’s a statement. It says, “We can take one song and turn it into six completely unique experiences.” Sure, some tracks hit harder than others, but isn’t that the point of exploration? As I wrapped up my listening session, I couldn’t help but think: if cloning songs was always this fun, maybe we’d have fewer boring albums out there. Rating: 8/10 Recommended For: Fans of ska-reggae hybrids who love hearing artists push boundaries.
