Doris Day With George Siravo And His Orchestra - Someone Like YouMy Dream Is Yours

Review by Colleen Hofmann

Alright, let’s dive into this little gem of an album—Someone Like You / My Dream Is Yours by Doris Day with George Siravo and His Orchestra. It’s one of those vintage pop records that feels like a warm cup of tea on a rainy day. Released under Columbia in the UK, it’s got that classic charm that just sticks with you. First off, the title track “Someone Like You” is an absolute bop. I mean, how can you not get hooked? Doris Day’s voice has this honey-smooth quality that just floats over the orchestra. The lyrics are kinda timeless too—it’s about longing for someone who’s gone, but it doesn’t feel heavy or sad. More like… wistful? Yeah, that’s the word. There’s a bit where the strings swell up, and it gives me goosebumps every time. Honestly, if this song came out today, I reckon it’d still climb the charts. People love a good heartstring tugger, no matter the era. Then there’s “My Dream Is Yours.” This one’s fun. It’s got this playful vibe to it, like Doris is letting loose a bit more. The brass section really pops here—it’s jazzy without being too showy, y’know? And her delivery? Super cheeky. It’s impossible not to smile when she sings about dreams coming true. Like, it’s all so optimistic, but not in a cringey way. Just genuine. Makes me wanna grab a milkshake and pretend I’m in some old-school diner scene from a movie. What gets me about this album is how simple yet effective it is. These songs don’t need crazy production tricks or flashy gimmicks—they’re just solid tunes backed by a killer orchestra. George Siravo clearly knew what he was doing because everything flows perfectly. Plus, Doris Day could sing the phone book and make it sound magical. No joke. You know what’s wild though? Listening to this now makes me realize how much we’ve lost in modern music. Not saying everything back then was better (hello, autotune exists for a reason), but there’s something refreshing about hearing real instruments and raw talent take center stage. Oh, random thought: If aliens ever landed on Earth and asked for examples of human art, I’d totally hand them this album. Then again, maybe they’d prefer Beyoncé. Who knows with aliens, right? Anyway, give this record a spin if you’re feeling nostalgic or just need something easy on the ears. Trust me, it’s worth it.

One of Doris' most beautiful songs. Great movie. Love songs were her best, & most memorable. Too bad her private life didn't reflect all of the great endings of her movies. She deserved the best. God Bless her RIP Doris.

Such a beautiful tune written by Harry Warren & lyrics by Ralph Blane for this '49 movie with the same name.

Love this flick. For you Edgar Kennedy fans, this was his very last appearance & the only time you could see him in full technicolor.
Was that the great Eve Arden there with her?

A perfect example - though only one of thousands - of the reasons I love the Big Band era so much. The music is bouncy, fun, and swings along, while the lyrics are simple,, but clever, and the delivery is sheer perfection (nod to you, Doris). You just wanna enter IN to the fun and sing along. A very ordinary song that is very very outstanding!

Glad you posted this. I just heard this snappy number for the first time, in an episode of Hawaii 5-0, of all places. Episode 907, the 200th episode, was mostly set in the 1940s - in the few days around the attack on Pearl Harbor, for some reason, not relevant here - and there was a nightclub scene. The song being performed was this. Intrigued, I investigated, and google led me here. I see the song was recorded more than six years after that scene was set, and the producers may get a tongue-in-cheek cpmment from me one day. But meanwhile, I'm glad to add another song to my mental jukebox. Thank you!
