Album Review: Systems Up Windows Down by HAAi – A Technicolor Trip Through Clubland Alright, buckle up because Systems Up Windows Down by HAAi is like that chaotic yet oddly satisfying night out where you lose your shoes but find yourself. Released in 2019 on the legendary Mute label (yep, the same one that gave us Depeche Mode), this UK-born stunner blends progressive house, techno, and experimental club vibes into something that feels both retro and futuristic. It’s kinda like if Daft Punk and Aphex Twin had a baby who grew up listening to pirate radio. Let’s dive into two tracks that stuck with me harder than glitter after a festival weekend. First off, we’ve got “CHONKIBOI.” Oh man, this track hits like an espresso shot at 3 AM when you’re already way too hyped. The beat builds slowly—teasing, taunting—and then BAM! You’re suddenly spinning around your bedroom like it’s Berghain circa 2015. There’s this weird little vocal snippet that keeps looping, almost like someone whispering secrets from another dimension. Is it annoying? Maybe. But also addictive as hell. If aliens ever invade Earth, I’m playing this track during negotiations—it’ll either scare them off or make them wanna join the rave. Then there’s “Don’t Flatter Yourself Love,” which might just be my spirit animal. This tune has all the sass of a drag queen roasting a bad outfit, wrapped up in a pulsating bassline that refuses to quit. It’s got layers upon layers of sound that feel like they shouldn’t work together—but somehow do. Like peanut butter and pickles. Or wearing socks with sandals. The whole thing feels like a middle finger to anyone who says dance music can’t have depth. Spoiler alert: It absolutely can. The rest of the album follows suit—tracks like “Systems Up, Windows Down” bring the energy while sneaking in moments of introspection, and “Stop Looking At Me Swan” sounds like what would happen if Björk decided to DJ at a warehouse party. Producer/writer/performer Teneil Throssell (aka HAAi) clearly poured her soul into this project, with help from some heavy hitters like Marco Spaventi on mixing duties and Sam John handling mastering. What makes Systems Up Windows Down stand out isn’t just its genre-bending audacity; it’s how personal it feels. You can tell HAAi wasn’t trying to chase trends here—she was making exactly the kind of music she wanted to hear. And honestly? We need more artists doing that. So yeah, if you’re looking for background noise for your next Zoom meeting, maybe skip this one. But if you want an album that grabs you by the shoulders, shakes you awake, and demands you move your body, this is it. Just don’t blame me if you end up dancing so hard you pull a hamstring. Final thought: Listening to this album feels like being let in on a secret—a really cool, slightly weird, life-affirming secret. Also, now I kinda want to name my firstborn CHONKIBOI.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know? The album *Systems Up Windows Down* by HAAi is a wild ride through electronic beats and experimental sounds. It’s got this cool mix of Progressive House, Techno, and Club/Dance vibes. What’s really interesting is that HAAi, whose real name is Teneil Throssell, didn’t just perform on the album—she also wrote, produced, and mixed most of it herself. Oh, and fun fact: the track *CHONKIBOI* appears twice, but one version has a cheeky twist with “Choi Park” added to the title. It’s like she’s playing with us, keeping things fresh and unpredictable. The whole thing screams UK underground club energy, and it’s no surprise it came out on Mute, a label known for pushing boundaries.

Just heard this on 6 Music. I thought it was a 90s techno/trance track I didn't know. Sounds very much like "Return to the Source" by the Psychik Warriors Ov Gaia and other stuff from then
