Album Review: I Took Her Love For Granted by Hefner Hefner’s 1999 release, I Took Her Love For Granted, is a gem of UK indie rock that feels like a warm, slightly awkward hug from an old friend. Released under Too Pure and steeped in the lo-fi charm of its era, this album isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel—it’s just spinning it with heart. The record leans into raw emotion, stripped-down production, and lyrics so personal they feel like eavesdropping on someone’s diary. Let’s talk tracks. The opener, “I Took Her Love For Granted,” sets the tone perfectly. It’s one of those songs where you’re not sure if you should nod along or sit quietly and process your life choices. Antony and John bring a vocal performance that’s equal parts earnest and fragile, making it impossible not to connect. There’s no flashy production here—just simple instrumentation letting the storytelling shine through. And honestly? That’s what sticks with me. It’s like overhearing a confession at a pub, unfiltered and real. Then there’s “A Belly Full Of Babies,” which might be my favorite moment on the album (yeah, I said it). This track hits different because it balances wry humor with a tinge of melancholy—a classic Hefner move. The melody sticks to you like gum on a shoe, but it’s the lyrical wit that keeps you coming back. Lines about love, regret, and everyday chaos are delivered with such casual brilliance that you almost miss how clever they are. Almost. Miti’s recording work deserves a shoutout too—it’s clean enough to let the band’s quirks breathe without polishing away their rough edges. And can we take a second to appreciate Jack Hayter’s stylophone? It adds this weirdly endearing layer of DIY charm that makes the whole thing feel homemade in the best way possible. What strikes me most about I Took Her Love For Granted is how unapologetically human it feels. These aren’t anthems for stadiums; these are songs for late-night walks, rainy afternoons, or staring out windows while thinking about stuff you probably shouldn’t. So yeah, Hefner didn’t set out to change the world with this album—but maybe they didn’t need to. Sometimes, capturing a moment in time is enough. And as I listen to these tracks again, I’m reminded of something kinda beautiful: even when we mess up, take things for granted, or feel lost, music like this lets us know we’re not alone. Oh, and fun fact—apparently sleeve notes were written by John himself. So basically, he gave us permission to overanalyze his work. Cheers to that.

The low definition of the video makes it look dirtier than it is. Hilarious.
