New Musik - From A To B

Album Review: From A To B by New Musik – A Synth-Pop Gem That Still Hits Alright, let’s talk about From A To B by New Musik. Released in 1994, this album is like a time capsule of electronic goodness mixed with rock and pop vibes. It’s got that retro-futuristic feel—like someone took the best parts of the '80s, added some '90s edge, and threw it all into a blender. The genres here are kinda all over the place but in the best way possible: electro, new wave, synth-pop, and even a dash of pop rock. And yeah, Tony Mansfield? Dude did everything. Composer, producer, guitarist, vocalist—you name it, he probably had his hands on it. Now, let me break it down for ya. I’m not gonna go track-by-track because who’s got time for that? But two songs really stuck with me: "She's a Magazine" and "Dead Fish (Don't Swim Home)." First up, “She's a Magazine.” Man, this one just slaps. It’s catchy as hell, with these bouncy synths that make you wanna grab your Walkman (or Spotify playlist, whatever floats your boat) and hit repeat. The lyrics are kinda quirky too—it’s basically an ode to someone who’s as glossy and polished as a magazine cover. You can tell Mansfield was having fun when he wrote this. Plus, the bassline? Super smooth. Tony Hibbert deserves props for keeping things groovy. Then there’s “Dead Fish (Don’t Swim Home).” This one’s darker, moodier, almost haunting. The title alone makes you do a double-take, right? Like…what does that even mean? But once you dive into the song, it clicks. It’s about feeling lost or out of place, like you’re swimming against the current. Phil Towner’s percussion gives it this driving rhythm that pulls you in, while the synths create this eerie atmosphere. Honestly, it’s the kind of track that sneaks up on you and stays in your head long after it’s over. What’s wild is how well this album holds up. Even though it came out nearly 30 years ago, it doesn’t feel dated. Maybe it’s because we’re living in a world where synthwave and retro sounds are making a comeback, but From A To B feels fresh. Or maybe it’s just that Tony Mansfield knew what he was doing. Dude clearly had vision, from the music to the artwork (shoutout to Jan Leary for those liner notes). One thing that struck me? How many countries this album touched back in the day—South Africa, Japan, Europe, Canada, Australia, you name it. Feels like it was everywhere but somehow still flew under the radar. Kinda like finding a hidden gem at a thrift store, ya know? So yeah, if you’re into stuff that’s a little left-of-center but still super melodic, give From A To B a spin. It’s the kind of record that reminds you why music matters—it tells stories, evokes feelings, and sometimes even makes you laugh at dead fish metaphors. Oh, and hey, if anyone sees Tony Mansfield out there, tell him thanks for letting us live by numbers for a while.
