Album Review: La Tortue Rouge (The Red Turtle) Musique Originale by Laurent Perez Del Mar If you’re a fan of soundtracks that feel like an emotional rollercoaster wrapped in a warm hug, then La Tortue Rouge (The Red Turtle) is probably already on your radar. Released in 2016 under Quartet Records, this Spanish gem dives deep into the world of stage and screen music with heart-wrenching beauty. Composed by Laurent Perez Del Mar, it’s not just a soundtrack—it’s more like a musical diary of feelings. Let’s talk about two tracks that stuck with me because they felt like scenes in themselves. First up, “The Dream.” It’s one of those pieces where you can almost picture yourself floating through someone else’s imagination. The cello work by Sarah Hammel-Gueta hits hard—it’s soft but somehow heavy at the same time, kinda like nostalgia for something you’ve never lived through. You don’t need to see the movie to feel what’s going on here; it paints its own story without needing words. Then there’s “Love In The Sky,” which is just... wow. I mean, Julia Wischniewski’s soprano vocals? Chills. This track feels like staring at the stars while holding hands with someone who matters—a little bittersweet, a lotta hopeful. It builds slowly, layering strings and delicate orchestration until you’re completely swept away. Honestly, I had to pause writing this review halfway through listening to it because I got lost in my own thoughts. That’s how good it is. What makes this album stand out is how organic everything feels. Sure, there are big moments with the Macedonian Radio Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by Oleg Kontradenko, but there are also intimate touches, like when Perez Del Mar himself jumps in on flute or percussion. And props to Fabien Devillers for mixing and Alexis Bardinet for mastering—everything sounds crisp yet raw, like it’s alive. I gotta say, though, the whole thing left me thinking about turtles way more than expected. Like, how do they even decide to swim in a straight line when life throws tsunamis their way? Maybe that’s the secret sauce of this album—it reminds us we’re all just trying to stay afloat, even if sometimes it feels like we’re paddling against invisible currents. Anyway, whether you’re into soundtracks, scores, or just music that tells stories, give La Tortue Rouge a spin. Just maybe keep some tissues handy—you’ve been warned.

About Laurent Perez Del Mar

Born: March 10, 1974 in Nice, Alpes-Maritimes, France Laurent Perez del Mar started playing the piano at a very early age. He studied music at the Conservatoire and majored in composition. On top of his musical curriculum, he also studied medicine and became an MD. With music his first calling, he moved to Paris where he was very quickly scouted by major advertising agencies (Publicis, TBWA, Ogilvy, Young&Rubicam to name a few) and started working with them. After scoring more than twenty short films and forty commercials (Bronze Lion in Cannes for BETC Euro RSCG) along with various TV shows, he wrote his first feature film score in 2007 for FEAR OF THE DARK by Prima Linea. This underground animation movie was released to critical acclaim. He recently wrote the score for feature animation ZARAFA, by award-winning director Rémi Bezançon (3 Césars for THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE) and award-nominee Jean-Christophe Lie (2011 Césars for LHOMME A LA GORDINI). Zarafa was nominated for the César 2013 of best animated movie. In 2013, he wrote the scores of WOLFY, THE INCREDIBLE SECRET by Eric Omond and Gregoire Solotareff, which won the César 2014 of best animation movie, and THE BROTHERHOOD OF TEARS by Jean-Baptiste Andrea. In 2014, he writes the score of NOW OR NEVER by Serge Frydman (North West Productions). In 2015, EVOLUTION MAN by Jamel Debbouze, A LOUCURA ENTRE NOS by Fernanda Vareille, ANTIGANG by Benjamin Rocher with Jean Reno In 2016, THE RED TURTLE, by Oscar winner Michael Dudok De Wit won the special prize of the 69th Cannes Film Festival in the "Un certain regard" category, produced by Studio Ghibli, Wild Bunch, Why Not and Prima Linea.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know? The music album *La Tortue Rouge (The Red Turtle)*, released in 2016, is a stunning blend of orchestral and emotional soundscapes. It was composed by Laurent Perez Del Mar, who not only played multiple instruments like the flute and percussion but also handled programming duties. The Macedonian Radio Symphonic Orchestra brought his compositions to life, while soprano Julia Wischniewski added an ethereal touch to the score. Interestingly, the album’s mastering and mixing were done by different engineers, Alexis Bardinet and Fabien Devillers, giving it a polished, cinematic feel. Tracks like "The Tsunami" and "Love In The Sky" capture the raw emotion of the animated film it accompanies. It's a beautiful example of how music can tell a story all on its own.
