Album Review: Unhappy by Models (1982) Released in 1982 under A&M Records, Unhappy by the UK-based rock band Models is a record that quietly punches above its weight. It’s not the kind of album that screams for attention, but it lingers in your mind like an old friend you haven’t seen in years. The genre is unmistakably rock, yet there’s something about the way Models blend post-punk grit with melodic hooks that makes this album feel oddly timeless. Let’s dive into two standout tracks: “Unhappy” and “Rate Of Change.” The title track, “Unhappy,” hits hard right from the opening riff. It’s raw, unfiltered, and carries this brooding energy that feels both personal and universal. You can almost picture the dimly lit clubs of early '80s Britain where this track would have thrived. What sticks with me isn’t just the driving guitar work but the lyrics—simple yet evocative, they capture that gnawing sense of dissatisfaction we’ve all felt at some point. It’s the kind of song that sneaks up on you when you least expect it, replaying itself in your head long after the needle lifts off the vinyl. Then there’s “Rate Of Change,” which takes things down a notch but doesn’t lose any of the emotional punch. This one’s slower, more contemplative, almost as if the band wanted to give listeners a moment to breathe. The bassline here deserves special mention—it grooves in a way that pulls you deeper into the track without ever overpowering the vocals. There’s a vulnerability to the delivery that makes it memorable, like hearing someone confess something they’ve kept bottled up for too long. It’s not flashy, but it’s real, and sometimes that’s all you need. What strikes me most about Unhappy is how understated it feels compared to other albums of its era. While many bands were chasing chart-topping anthems, Models seemed content to let their music simmer. Sure, the production could’ve been sharper, and yeah, it might not appeal to everyone, but isn’t that part of its charm? In the end, Unhappy reminds me of those rare albums that don’t try too hard to impress—they just exist, quietly confident in their own skin. And honestly, isn’t it kinda funny how the best stuff often comes from places you’d never think to look?

I remember jumping around to this with my mates in school, and about 4 years later with a mate at the Kardoma Cafe on William Street.
