The Delay In The Universal Loop - Split Consciousness

Album Review: Split Consciousness by The Delay In The Universal Loop Alright, let’s talk about Split Consciousness. This 2015 gem from The Delay In The Universal Loop is one of those albums that kinda sneaks up on you. It’s a wild mix of genres—dance, hip-hop, electronic, pop/rock—and styles like synth-pop and IDM (that’s intelligent dance music for the uninitiated). Released under Moon Sounds Records, Dilated Time, and Cemetery Sisters, it feels like this album was cooked up in some alternate dimension where all these sounds just work. And honestly? They do. First off, big props to Warren Kroll for mixing this thing into something cohesive. Hats off to The Delay In The Universal Loop too—they wrote, produced, and clearly poured their cosmic souls into this project. Now, let me tell ya, there are A LOT of tracks here. Like…a lot. Some repeat, which makes it feel more like a journey than an album at times. But hey, isn’t life repetitive anyway? Two tracks really stuck with me: “Planetary Dance” and “Ocean’s Oscillators.” Let’s break ‘em down. “Planetary Dance” kicks things off with this hypnotic groove that feels like floating through space while someone whispers secrets in your ear. There’s a version with Laura Loriga singing, and her voice adds this ethereal layer that gives me goosebumps every time. It’s not overly flashy or loud—it’s subtle but powerful, y’know? Like when you’re staring at the stars and suddenly realize how small you are. That track alone could soundtrack any late-night drive or existential crisis. Then there’s “Ocean’s Oscillators,” which hits different. It’s got this pulsing beat that builds and drops in waves (pun totally intended). The synths swirl around like water currents pulling you deeper into the vibe. I kept coming back to this one because it feels alive, like it’s breathing with you. Plus, the title itself is just cool as hell—who wouldn’t want to vibe out to something called “Ocean’s Oscillators”? What’s wild about Split Consciousness is how it doesn’t try too hard to fit into one box. You’ve got bangers like “Texan Daylight,” chill introspective moments like “Your World Breathes Into Me,” and even glitchy weirdness like “Pneuma (Keeps Glitching Away).” It’s messy in the best way possible, like flipping through channels on an old TV and finding gold no matter where you land. Here’s the kicker though—the album repeats songs. At first, I was like, “Wait, didn’t I already hear this?” But then I realized it’s kinda genius. Repetition can be meditative, right? Like listening to the same mantra over and over until it clicks. Or maybe they were just messing with us. Either way, it works. So yeah, Split Consciousness might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re into experimental vibes with a dash of nostalgia, give it a shot. Honestly, writing this review made me wanna go listen to it again. Maybe I will. Or maybe I’ll just stare at my ceiling and wonder what “Eternal Youth of the 7th Universe” means. Who knows? Oh, and one last thing—why does this album remind me of a sci-fi movie that doesn’t exist yet? Someone should make that happen.

I think some of you are missing the mark of this music. I think it has a raw electronic edge to it that sets it apart from the typical lame electronic dance music that sounds like its all made on an iPad, using pre-programed cheese synth presets. The zero flaw sterilized edm music made today lacks the imperfections and raw analog power the this band captures and utilizes in a fresh and unique way. If you don't like this particular song, do yourself a favor and have a listen to the rest of the songs from the album. Yes album, remember those? If you don't like one song of an album, maybe it's because you haven't listened to the album and hear the song in its proper context, the way it was meant to be heard.
