Album Review: I Was Young In '58 / Mona Lisa by Kenneth Swanström Alright, let’s talk about this little gem from Sweden. Released in 1978 on the Jamboree Sound label, Kenneth Swanström’s I Was Young In '58 / Mona Lisa is a straight-up Rock & Roll ride that feels like a time machine to the late '70s. It’s raw, it’s unpolished, and honestly? That’s what makes it so dang charming. The album kicks off with the title track, "I Was Young In '58." Man, this one sticks with you. It’s got that classic rock vibe—twangy guitars, punchy drums, and Swanström’s voice just kinda lounging there like he doesn’t have a care in the world. The lyrics are simple but hit hard because they’re relatable. You don’t need to be Swedish or born in ’58 to get it. It’s about looking back at your younger days with a mix of nostalgia and “man, I was dumb back then” chuckles. Every time I hear it, I think about old photos of myself in middle school with those painfully bad haircuts. You know the ones. Then there’s "Mona Lisa." Okay, so this isn’t some highbrow art critique—it’s more like Swanström took the name and ran with it. This track has a cool groove to it, kind of sultry but still upbeat. The guitar riff is sneaky good; it creeps up on you and before you know it, you’re tapping your foot like crazy. There’s something about how Swanström sings “Mona Lisa” that feels almost playful, like he’s teasing her mystery instead of taking it too seriously. It’s not gonna change your life, but it’ll definitely make your day better. What I love most about this album is its honesty. It doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. No fancy production tricks or overthought arrangements—just two tracks of pure, stripped-down Rock & Roll fun. And honestly, sometimes that’s all you need. Here’s the kicker though: listening to this record makes me wonder if Kenneth Swanström ever thought people would still be talking about it decades later. Probably not. But hey, here we are. Maybe that’s the magic of music—you never really know who it’ll stick with or why. So grab a beer (or a soda if you’re boring), throw this on, and let yourself get lost in its scrappy charm.
